Winter Salon

Winter Salon

Hi all, these are getting bigger and bigger since we started them over the summer...so come on by if you can after work in midtown on Tuesday, and definitely bring your business cards (p.s. it has nothing to do with hair drying I just thought I'd draw something "salon-like".)

What • Salon • n. A clever French word connoting an opportunity to mingle, drink and catch up with friends and colleagues in publishing.

When: Tuesday, December 2, 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Where: Stout, 133 West 33rd Street, in the cellar downstairs. 212.629.6191

Why: Because this is the last one before 2009! And if you've ever worked / freelanced / illustrated for O, YM, Spin, Vibe, Men's Journal, Men's Health, Blender, Pop Mechanics, Best Life, Time Out, Maxim, Details, Playboy, The NY Post, Quick & Simple, Real Simple, Wired, or even Cat Fancy!.... you're guaranteed to see someone you know. See you there! /// HJ

Things I Am Thankful For (A Note from Your President)

2009 will be my tenth year in the SPD.

I love working for the Society; whether you're a photographer or a designer, an illustrator or an intern, a photo editor or an editor, participating in this organization is a terrific way to get an inside look at how great magazines are made. It's a front-row seat to the present-tense history of America.

Which is why this is a particularly painful time for many of us, our friends and colleagues. We're living in the end of one era of publishing--a seismic shift in what models of media will be viable--and experiencing firsthand the painful repercussions of a failed economic philosophy.

SPD PUB 43 Design Annual Has (Almost) Arrived

Yep, that's right. The hotly anticipated SPD PUB 43 Design Annual will be reaching our shores from Singapore come mid/late December 2008! As it's chock full of the most innovative, exciting editorial design work from 2007--including the Magazine of the Year Winners and the Members' Choice winner--you will definitely want to get your hands on this one as soon as it hits the SPD offices!

Stay tuned to http://spd.org in the coming weeks for more information on how to get your copy, along with an in-depth Q&A from this year's annual designers, Weapon of Choice (Tom Brown and Todd Albertson), as they discuss their concepts behind the design, and why debossing isn't really as easy as it looks.

We had an amazing turn out at the Land Sea Air benefit auction on Wednesday night; over 100 photographs covered the walls at the Hosfelt Gallery, we enjoyed some wonderful wines from Astor Wines, savory food by Cafiero Lussier, and were called to attention as Sarah Mudge from Phillips led us through some intense bidding wars in the live auction.

Thank you all for coming out, and for those who couldn't make it, we hope to see you at our next event. Pictures (and video!) after the jump.

the Cinematic Art of Batiste Madalena

I've always been a fan of these early, hand painted treasures of poster art, but to see the the vibrant colors, elegant type design (all drawn by hand!) and bold graphics at the Museum of Modern Art's new exhibition of Batiste Madalena's surviving posters will transport you back to the early years of American cinema.

Jeg er hjemme!

Jeg er hjemme!

In Danish, that translates to "I'm back home!"
I just returned from a fascinating visit to Denmark and Norway where i was asked to speak at a design conference along with our very own SPD President Scott Dadich, Eva Spring of Real Simple, Anton Ioukhnovets of GQ and David Curcurito of Esquire and of course many good times were had. Although this was the sole purpose of the trip (and due to my infatuation with Danish design aesthetic,) I couldn't help

Party Preview: Food & Wine

Our new friends at Cafiero Lussier are cooking up something extra special for our LandSeaAir Auction guests.  Consider these yummy bites for a chilly fall night as you mull over purchasing that Richard Barnes or the Max Vadukul...or both!

•Truffled Mac 'N Cheese Tarts w/ Fried Leeks
•Saffron Simmered Shrimp w/ Red Pepper Dipping Sauce
•Shredded Chicken Mole in Tortilla cups w/ Queso Blanco
•Autumnal Cheeses w/ Herbed Crostini

Just a glimpse of the treats you'll find on November 19th.  Now pair that with a glass of Sicilian red wine (2006 Maravigna, Nero d'Avola) or a delicious sparkling white (NV Prosecco, Mia) chosen for us by Astor Wines & Spirits and you're all set.

See you next week!

Designing 'The Knot'

Designing 'The Knot'

If you've gotten engaged in the last ten years, then you've probably heard of The Knot -- one of the leading wedding brands online, also in print and video. As an online destination, TheKnot.com is a place where engaged couples and their friends find ideas, up-to-date wedding advice and inspiration.

I recently got in touch with Lori Richmond, Design Director of Online Editorial, and Kristen Dudish, Online Designer, for some insight into designing and working for The Knot. We also discussed some of the recent changes made to the site when they redesigned a few months ago.… MORE

In The Mood For Votin'

In The Mood For Votin'

As the N.Y. Times aptly put it yesterday, after almost a "Year Of Sitting On The Edge of Our Seats" I thought I'd post a bit of a tension release on the eve of the big day. On the jump are a few selections from the Society of Illustrators exhibition recently curated by Edel Rodriguez. The show included some of the best illustration published over this fiery political year by artists Tom Bachtell, Steve Brodner, Philip Burke, Joe Ciardiello, Thomas Fluharty, Drew Friedman, Robert Grossman, Victor Juhasz, Tim O'Brien, Roberto Parada, Hanoch PivenFelix Sockwell and Brian Stauffer. Enjoy.

In addition, if you're like me and have been completely embarrassed by the archaic design of your polling place the past elections, take a picture of it: The N.Y. Times and Design Observer are promoting a project asking voters to document their polling experiences across the country, information is here and here.

The above thumbnail is a selection from AIGA's Get Out the Vote 2008, on view until the end of the week in NYC.
