Best in Show: This Dog is Paper Trained!

Best in Show: This Dog is Paper Trained!

SPD's 44th annual Gala was a great event, but how did this pedigree pooch stack up on the environment? Bred to win. Our secret?  By printing everything for Competition 44 on 100% recycled paper. We began by sniffing out the best printer for the job - searching for sustainability, without sacrificing quality.

Can't Re-Touch This

Another summer begins, another kerfuffle stirred up by a foreign fashion magazine: The New York Times today covers the June issue of French Elle, and photographer Peter Lindbergh's covers and interiors of the glamorous sans makeup or retouching--what the Times refers to as a "raw-celebrity" movement.

New trend, or the cycle of magazine life?

The New Yorker Meets the iPhone

The New Yorker Meets the iPhone

In a twist on the debate about bringing magazines into the digital world, The New Yorker features a cover this week from Jorge Colombo created entirely on the artist's iPhone with the brushes app. More background over at The New Yorker's site, and step-by-step video of the cover's creation after the jump... … MORE

SPD Gala 44: The Film Shorts

In case you missed them on the evening of May 8th, your co-chairs, (yours truly and Judith) joined creative minds to film with the help of David Rinella, a few shorts that were featured in between the award categories. So we've included them here for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy...

SPD Gala Screentest: TRIUMPH

Here he is, in all his glory from the night of the Gala (easy on the powder, and, really -- keep that eyelash curler away!), Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, sharing his own early influences, favorite magazines, deep thoughts about fashion, and more. Even Triumph loves magazines.

For him to poop on!

(It's Triumph, so, you know, the decision is yours about how high to maintain the volume if you're watching at work. We're not saying it's NSFW. We're just... not saying at all. -- Ed.)

SPD Gala: Screentest

A FILM BY GREG BRUNKALLA // A LEGS PRODUCTION

After the sneak-peek from a few weeks back, we wanted to share the full-length film that opened the Gala. Thanks to our co-chairs Judith and Nathalie, over 30 of the editorial design and photo greatest shared their early inspirations, their faves and must-reads, and of course, their Barbara Walters moment, "If I was a dog, I'd be..." Watch and love.
Dog Gone...

Dog Gone...

Now that your 44th Awards Gala co-hosts have had a chance to exhale, we'd like to share some of our favorite captured moments from a wonderful evenings worth of celebrating stellar magazines.
To view the gallery, the whole shebang photographed by Bryan Bedder can be found here.  Stay tuned for the top dogs screen test-inspired film from the evening, a hilarious Triumph the insult dog's cameo and some of our film shorts from the awards presentation!

Can't Touch This

You may have your fancy SPD medals, but I gotta tell you, I think I have something that's pretty hard to top. I have an original Paul Davis portrait of my own--literally.

The Ultimate Portfolio

Your palms are sweaty. You know the answer to "What's your greatest weakness?" (I'm just too detail-oriented.) You've got on your best Banana Republic businesswear outfit complete with subtle hints of hipsterness (visible tattoo, Converse, rolled-up sleeves). What are you carrying in your messenger bag/manpurse?

Do tell ... What type of portfolio do you prefer? Poll after the jump.

Members' Choice Finalists!

Members' Choice Finalists!

Huge congrats to the variety of finalists in tomorrow night's Members' Choice Awards -- we're pleased (and a little surprised, we should admit -- ES) to say that there were more votes this year for Members' Choice than in previous years, even with our abbreviated voting period. An unbreakable tie gives us a total of SIX finalists, from some of the biggest (AARP the Magazine) to some of the smaller (The Village Voice) -- and yet, all really great work! Check after the jump for all the Members' Choice Finalists, and follow our twitter feed tomorrow night to find out who the winners are!

But today approval was given, despite the nudity.

Student Photo Competition Winners Announced

Student Photo Competition Winners Announced

The Society is pleased to announce the winners of our first-ever student photo competition. We were thrilled to receive over 250 entries from schools across the country to our Land/Sea/Air contest, and while it took us awhile to get our act together to post the victors (okay, my act), it doesn't take away from just how darn proud we are of our kids.

Annie Leibovitz Honored

Annie Leibovitz Honored

The highlight for me at last night's National Magazine Awards (aside from the good people of Automobile's acceptance speech which was freaking amazing) was ASME bestowing Annie Leibovitz with the Creative Excellence Award. A kind of Hall of Presidents graced the stage--Jann Wenner, Tina Brown, Anna Wintour and Graydon Carter--each to share their respect and gratitude for Annie's brilliance on the pages of their magazines.   … MORE

Design Awards: Service Feature, Single Page or Spread

It's fun seeing the way the entries broke out this year with the new categories. In years past with the open categories, we'd see a gorgeous food story going head-to-head with a celebrity profile in the Feature Design category. In Pub 44, service competes with service, which in this case yielded the following gorgeousness in the Service Feature, Single Page or Spread.

Photography Awards: Service Feature, Story

More Photography Service here, and our first Medal Finalists showing off the power of the story: not only a great opener, but strong commissions throughout the story. A generous look at modern, green home design in Joshua Tree; eggs more artful than anything the Easter Bunny might bring; lakeside vacations that definitely leave you itching to ditch this computer (but don't! -- Ed); and a shudder-inducing reminder: You Walk Wrong.
