Rolling Stone: The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time

Rolling Stone: The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time

Rolling Stone has just published The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, a high-quality rock 'n' roll bookazine packed with high-quality portrait illustration.

Most of the illustrations in the bookazine previously appeared in two special issues of the magazine called "The Immortals," that were published in 2004 and 2005, and were art directed by then-Rolling Stone AD Amid Capeci. The book features famous pop and rock stars writing about their favorite performers (Jackson Brown on Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello on The Beatles, etc.)

The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time features a murderer's row of illustrators, including Daniel Adel, Dan Brown, Marc Burckhardt, Christian Clayton, Paul Davis, Rob Day, Gerard Dubois, Nathan Fox, Olaf Hajek, Jody Hewgill, Anita Kunz, Tim O'Brien, Roberto Parada, Owen Smith, Dale Stephanos, Mark Summers, Andrea Ventura, Marco Ventura, and many more. This is a one-stop catalog of fine portrait illustration; one of the best resources of its type.

Current Rolling Stone art director Joseph Hutchinson explains how the project came together: "The editors updated the list of artists and we commissioned eight new illustrations that we added to the ones from The Immortals issues. We made the decision to go back to the illustrators that Amid had used before, so there was a continuity through the whole book. The only exception is Nathan Fox, who didn't have a piece in the original issues."

Above and on the next page are seven of the new illustrations commissioned for The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Art director: Joseph Hutchinson, deputy art director: Steven Charny.

Pop-Up Magazine Comes to New York City

Pop-Up Magazine Comes to New York City

Pop-Up Magazine, A Live Event, is coming to New York City on May 11, at 7.30pm at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Co-produced with ESPN the Magazine, it's going to be "stories, documentary films, interviews, photography, facts, and radio live on stage," and will feature a stellar array of writers, editors, filmmakers, and artists, including contributors to The New Yorker, This American Life, The New York Times Magazine, All Things Considered, Mother Jones, Studio 360 and much more. Produced by a non-profit group of journalists, they've put on four Pop-Up magazine events in San Francisco over the past couple years, all of which have sold out.

The events are not documented, so we don't have any photographs or images that we can show here. We did interview Pop-Up Magazine editor Douglas McGray to get a sense of what the event is all about and what you can expect to see and hear.

Tickets for Pop-Up Magazine, A Live Event will go on sale Thursday, April 28 at noon here.

Businessweek the Movie (sort of)

One of the highlights (and there were many) of the Bloomberg Businessweek: Process presentation for the SPD Speaker Event last week, was the mini-movie they made about how the magazine is put together. If you missed the event, or if you were there and want to see it again, go to the next page and feast your eyes.

Thanks to Bloomberg Businessweek creative director Richard Turley and graphics director Jennifer Daniel for a highly entertaining evening.

We're happy to say we've been able to move the presentation to a slightly larger room at the Businessweek HQ, and we have a handful of tickets we can sell now -- only until 5pm Wednesday afternoon when sales must close, but that leaves you plenty of time now to click through and buy. GQ iPad App v2.0

GQ iPad App v2.0

GQ icon.pngYou get an email saying that Fred Woodward would like to show you the new GQ iPad app that's about to launch. What do you do other than say "I'll be up there faster that you can spell "Galifianakis"?

The new version of the GQ iPad app has launched today. It was built with the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite also used by big titles like Glamour, WIRED and Reader's Digest. GQ's new take on the app goes beyond the previous RSS-feed style. In contrast, the new app is based on the print magazine driven by Fred Woodward's design direction and executed by the GQ art department, thus reflecting the look and feel of the print publication.

Overall, I would call this a huge leap forward in terms of the translation of GQ onto the iPad. It is done with a keen eye, reworking an already great design onto the tablet screen. I look forward to seeing the future iteration of the app from this talented staff, and hopefully its expansion into more utility-based mini apps with the same elegance and attitude. And yes: the gentleman from the print edition spine made it to the masthead screen at the end of the app.

>> I Want My HGTV: Following up on their successful cable-TV-to-print Food Network Magazine, Hearst Magazines and Scripps Networks will launch HGTV Magazine. Premiering in October 2011, the print magazine will focus on home improvement, decorating, gardening, food and entertaining. But the print offshoot will include broader lifestyle content, as well as contributions by HGTV personalities and a look behind the scenes of their shows.

>> Reverse Engineering: In an ironic twist, Conde Nast will be taking their Style.com website into the world of print. The print version of Style.com will be looking to capitalize on the huge numbers of the website (4.6 million unique visitors during the fall shows). The magazine is slated to launch immediately following October fashion week.

>> Webby News: Several magazine websites have been named finalists for the 2011 Webby Awards, to be revealed June 13. What's surprising (or not) is that the magazine sites are under consideration in non-magazine categories, evidence of the general strength of their content and design.

>> Knot a Success: The Nest, the shelter mag spin-off from The Knot, will be shutting down their print version. Citing a lack of advertising support among its many problems, the publishers will continue to produce a digital version of the magazine.
Pentagram's Adweek relaunch

Pentagram's Adweek relaunch

Pentagram has just posted Luke Hayman's smart and authoritative redesign of the advertising trade magazine, Adweek...

Pentagram's design for the new Adweek captures the fantastic energy of these changes in advertising. Like the new editorial tone, the design is punchy, entertaining and authoritative, inspired by the spirit of the magazine's 1980s heyday and intended to set Adweek apart from Advertising Age, its main competitor. The designers worked closely with managing editor Hillary Frey, Executive Editor James Cooper and Digital Editor Nicholas Eckhart. The design of the magazine will be carried forth by Creative Director Nick Mrozowski. The website is also being relaunched with a new design by Area 17.

>> Order Fonts Just Like Don Draper: In the dark ages of publishing (pre-1990), Photo-Lettering, Inc. Joe was working at The Stranger at the time, and since then, has served as deputy art director at Rolling Stone (small world) and spent some time with me at SpotCo.

Joe's now got the best title in the industry--"Head of Type" at Veer. He's they guy who makes those great little font specimens you see on the Veer site, and more importantly, Joe is the curator of the Veer font collection. But in case you didn't know, in his spare time, Joe designs type and does some pretty swell illustrations (and is available to do them for your publication...).
