A Note from SPD

A Note from SPD

Dear SPD Community,

Yesterday I sent this to all the members of SPD, and I wanted to share it with you here too.

Although it doesn't seem as though three years have passed, the time has come to bid farewell as President of the Board of Directors. I'm grateful to the entire Board for working together to make SPD the leading community support in our industry. Thanks to the Board's hard work and collaborative efforts, there are quite a number of accomplishments over the past year:

Fairchild Fashion Media:

Fairchild Fashion Media: "Smart, chic, and all business"

The Fairchild Fashion Media magazine group, the collection of fashion trade magazines published by Conde Nast, has undergone a major metamorphosis, thanks to creative director Nancy Butkus and editorial director Peter Kaplan. Butkus took over the creative helm of the group in October 2010, soon after Kaplan started. She has since led the redesign of five magazines as well as the relaunch of WWD. Butkus describes the look of the magazines as "smart, chic, and all business." It's the third collaboration for Butkus and Kaplan, who worked together at Manhattan Inc. in the 1980s and at The New York Observer in the 2000s.

All of the Fairchild Fashion Media magazines are oversized, 10" x 12" and have varying publication frequencies. Beauty Inc was relaunched in February, targeted to the cosmetics and fragrance industry. Menswear, launched in 2010, is a hybrid called B to C (Business to Consumer) and is sold on newsstands. It features industry insider news, fashion and style features, interviews and profiles. FN, formerly called Footwear News, is weekly, and was relaunched over the summer. The new design of WWD debuted in January, with two new sections, Style, which appears daily, and Men'sweek, which appears every Thursday.

Classic Art Department Mastheads #2: Men's Journal, October 1996

For the second in our series of great art department mastheads, we're highlighting the genius cluster of people who worked at Men's Journal during the time of their October 1996 issue. Men's Journal was still published in its oversize format, a lively, elegant, great-looking magazine, filled with visual pleasures. Under the direction of art director David Armario, the magazine seamlessly fused refined typography, beautiful, bold photography, and a highly sophisticated approach to page design. Thanks to everyone from Men's Journal who so kindly contributed their remembrances of the magazine and their co-workers.

Fast Company's United States of Design Cover Challenge

Fast Company's October issue (and stand-alone app) is dedicated to their Masters of Design package, and features four special cover designs commissioned around the idea of "The United States of Design." Creative Director Florian Bachleda tells us more:
The theme for this year's annual "Masters of Design" issue was to focus on American Design, and one of the ideas was to commission select graphic designers to execute a Fast Company cover, with the subject and coverline being "The United States of Design". The only criteria for selecting the designers was that they weren't currently working at a magazine. You don't often get a chance to reach out to people like Paula Scher, Gail Anderson, and Carin Goldberg, but this seemed like a perfect project for three Hall of Fame designers. But we then also wanted at least one more of an alternative selection, someone who was not a designer. I've always been a huge fan of the commix work of Jayr Pulga. He's one of the original RAW Commix contributors, and wildly under-appreciated in my humble opinion. Jayr's beautiful drawing was a perfect compliment to the wonderful (and very different) designs that Carin, Gail and Paula did, and I hope people enjoy all four of them.

>> Custom Sports: The Sporting News is serious about not looking like just another print magazine app. At the first load of its new iPad app Sporting News for iPad asks the users to fully personalize the experience with their favorite team news as well as local TV listings for programming. The resulting front page of headlines conforms to your preferences as does a nearby "what to watch" page, which lists your local sport programming and even teases out the air times for games involving your favorite teams.

>> Print Redux (1x): The August issue of Print magazine was given a one-off makeover by London agency Spin, the highlight of which was this cover. See more of the issue here.

John Kascht iPad App: "cutting edge meets old school"

Above & Beyond: John Kascht is the latest iPad app from Joe Zeff Design, featuring the well-known illustrator and his caricatures of celebrities and political figures. In the spirit of JZD's other storytelling apps -- Time's 9/11 anniversary, Above & Beyond: George Steinmetz and The Final Hours of Portal 2 -- Above & Beyond: John Kascht goes beyond the artist's work to present a compelling story about Kascht himself with multimedia content that helps the audience better understand and appreciate what makes each drawing unique. … MORE

TIME's Multimedia 9/11 Special: In Print, Digital, and TV

TIME's Multimedia 9/11 Special: In Print, Digital, and TV

TIME magazine, like many others, has a special issue focusing on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 this week. More than any other magazine, though, TIME has dedicated not just the issue, but a special version of their iPad app, documentaries airing on HBO, CNN and other stations, and a hardcover book comprised of the interviews and photographs featured in the issue. From Editor Richard Stengel's letter opening the issue:
TIME has devoted nearly 100 covers to the events that came out of that fateful morning -- from the hunt for Osama bin Laden to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, from the anthrax scares to the controversies over Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib, and ultimately to the rebuilding of the American spirit at home. As the 10th anniversary approached, we wanted to reflect on not just the memory of that day but also the defining moments of the 9/11 era.

>> Style Files in October: Style.com will unveil its long-awaited print edition in late October, shortly after the spring runway shows. Publisher Fairchild considers it a natural extension of the brand. Former Nylon and Teen Vogue CD--and most recently VP/Advertising at Barney's--Lina Kutsovskaya will serve as creative director.

>> Maxim's iPad Fail: Maxim HD, an iPad-specific version of the print 'lad' magazine, has announced its end, less than a year after launch. Plans exist for a replacement (on the Mag+ platform) to launch "soon," but since it was discontinued with the magazine's June issue--and without a replacement--means it could not have been a bestseller.

>> Fascist Filching: On her design blog Brain Pickings, curator Maria Popova busts a Polish magazine's blatant thievery of Israeli illustrator Noma Bar's wonderful Adolph Hitler portrait.
Run, Sarah. Run!

Run, Sarah. Run!

With the next GOP Debate set for September 7th, Momma Grizzly (and former Alaska governor) Sarah Palin is keeping everyone guessing about whether or not she's going to claw her way into the race for the Republican Presidential nomination. Former Bush "brain" Karl Rove says she is going to declare for the race on September 3rd at a Tea Party rally.

While we're still not sure what newspapers and magazines she reguarly reads, we here at SPD say "Run, Sarah, Run!" Every magazine cover that she appears on creates controversy, and whenever we post a Sarah Palin item on the SPD site, traffic goes through the roof. So we think it's in the best interests of art directors everywhere that Sarah Palin run for President (please note that we said "run," not "win.") There won't be nearly as much fun graphic appeal in covers featuring Mitt Romney or Rick Perry (let alone Jon Huntsman), although, so far Michele Bachmann is proving to have some seriously fun(ny) cover potential. And unfortunately no editor would let any of us near what makes Rick Santorum a great cover subject.

Here's a look back at some notable Palin magazine covers from the past three years.
