David Downton Sketches Vanity Fair's Best Dressed

To honor the members of this year's Best-Dressed Hall of Fame, Chris Dixon and the team at Vanity Fair commissioned fashion illustrator David Downton to sketch 5 of their stylish ladies.
Downton traveled to Paris, New York, and London to paint his portraits from real-life sittings, a unique way of doing illustration in this day and age.

Take a look behind the scenes HERE as Downton sketches Sofia Coppola, Carolina Herrera, Daphne Guiness, Iman, and Countess Jacqueline De Ribes for Vanity Fair's September issue.

Moneta Sleet Photo Show at the Schomburg

Moneta Sleet Photo Show at the Schomburg

Photo alert! There are only two days left to see the Moneta Sleet, Jr. photo exhibit at the Schomburg Center in New York City. Sleet was the staff photographer for Ebony magazine in the 1950s and 60s, and this collection of over 100 photos includes intimate portraits of African American political and cultural celebrities, powerful photojournalism shot at civil rights demonstrations in the South, and some amazing portraits of Martin Luther King and his family. Sleet was the first African American photographer to win the Pulitzer Prize, for this photograph of Coretta Scott King at Martin Luther King's funeral.

The show closes on Friday, August 30. Take your Summer Friday and go see this show. As an added bonus, there's also a big Gordon Parks photo show upstairs. The 2/3 train stops right in front of the Schomburg, so it's an easy train ride.

More Moneta Sleet photos from the show on the next page.

O.R.D. - Outdoor Retailer Daily Magazine

O.R.D. - Outdoor Retailer Daily Magazine

Twice a year, Active Interest Media creative director Matthew Bates and his team produce a daily magazine at the Outdoor Retailer trade show, called O.R.D.. The show, which attracts over 21,000 attendees, takes place in Salt Lake City. This August, Bates and crew produced four daily magazines. Here are the covers and some background on how they came together.

Day 1:
Matthew Bates: We set up a makeshift photo studio out in one of the back hallways at the convention center, so it's easy for us to shoot subjects. But for this first cover, our editors wanted it to be about how Outdoor Retailer is getting too big for Salt Lake City. The show has grown so much over recent years that it's maxing out the city's ability to host it.

Celebrating a quarter century of CN Traveler

Celebrating a quarter century of CN Traveler

The 25th anniversary issue of Conde Nast Traveler (available at news stands both print and digital now!) is an extraordinary body of work and represents all that Design Director Rob Hewitt has been able to bring to the title since taking over the reigns back in 2011. The issue is a showcase of all that Traveler is great at: strong simple page composition, bold typography, ambitious info-graphics, smart illustration and of course the best travel photography in the business! This issue includes some stellar portraiture, great packaging and the type of nifty flourishes and attention to detail that will make you want to pick up a copy and keep it on your "ideas" shelf! Hewitt talks us through the issue after the jump. Congrats to his entire art and photo teams and here's to another 25 years!

"Breaking News You Can Use"

We're three weeks from SPD's first Speaker Series event of the fall, "News You Can Use," spotlighting the fast-paced world of newsmagazines and the multitaskers who make print, websites, tablet and mobile apps come to life for TIME, Newsweek and Huffington. It is a world that spins so quickly that we already have some breaking news to report:

Dirk Barnett, Newsweek's CD, will be leaving the magazine to helm a redesign at The New Republic. His replacement at Newsweek will be Lindsay Ballant. In two years at Newsweek Dirk oversaw a redesign, several controversial covers and the launch of an iPad edition. His last day at Newsweek is September 14, four days after the SPD event, and he's agreed to share the stage with D.W. Pine of TIME, Josh Klenert of Huffington and Joe Zeff of Joe Zeff Design to give his perspectives on what it takes to put out a newsmagazine in 2012.

Don't miss it. The event will take place at AOL/Huffington Post, 770 Broadway. Tickets are FREE for members, and going fast.

10 Lessons from Huffington Magazine

Josh Klenert, former SPD president and head of UX and Design for The Huffington Post, provides 10 takeaway lessons from his first 10 issues of Huffington magazine here

Josh will be on stage with the creative directors of TIME (D.W. Pine) and Newsweek (Dirk Barnett) and moderator Joe Zeff of Joe Zeff Design for the first SPD Speaker Series event of the new season on Sept. 10, called "News You Can Use." The event is FREE for members, $30 for non-members. Seating is limited; order your tickets here before they're gone.

Speaker Series Begins with "News You Can Use"

Tickets are now available for the first Speaker Series event of the fall, "News You Can Use," scheduled Sept. 10.

We have three distinguished speakers -- D.W. Pine of TIME magazine, Dirk Barnett of Newsweek Daily Beast and Josh Klenert of Huffington Magazine -- to discuss their ever-changing responsibilities in the newsmagazine business. Their perspectives cover a broad gamut: a venerable newsmagazine that has published since 1923; another that changed hands recently and has been linked to reports about discontinuing its print edition; and a newcomer that exists only digitally and never had a print edition. Between them, these three CDs juggle magazines, apps and websites amid breaking news, Olympics coverage, and a presidential campaign that presents constant challenges.

The event will be moderated by Joe Zeff of Joe Zeff Design, whose studio has created apps and covers for TIME and Newsweek, including this week's TIME cover. The event will take place at AOL/Huffington Post, 770 Broadway.

Seating is limited, and admission is FREE for SPD members. Details here.
