Better with Age? An Icon Reinvents at 60

Better with Age? An Icon Reinvents at 60

Last month, 60 years after its founding, Aperture Foundation relaunched its flagship publication Aperture, one of the world's leading photography magazines. Conceived by Executive Director Chris Boot, and editors Michael Famighetti and Melissa Harris to offer a more focused experience of great photography in print, the new Aperture sports a bold, new redesign, with more pages, new columns, even more inspiring images, and insightful thinkers on the key themes and ideas in photography today, all written with a broader audience in mind.

The award-winning London designers A2/SW/HK have re-envisioned the magazine as a luxurious print object defined by its tactile presence, dynamic typography unique to Aperture, and high-quality reproductions.

Breaking: Time/Meredith Merger a No-Go

Breaking: Time/Meredith Merger a No-Go

Well, that didn't last long. In a surprising turn of events, the proposed merger between Time Inc. and Meredith Corporation has fallen apart. In a memo to staff obtained by SPD today, Time Inc. CEO Jeff Bewkes announced that the magazine group will become an "independent, publicly-traded company."

The memo further states that, despite the rumors of Time, SI, Money, and Fortune not being part of the proposed deal with Meredith, "all of Time Inc.'s magazines will stay in the portfolio."

Swissted: Punk Rock Posters in Swiss Modernist Style

Swissted: Punk Rock Posters in Swiss Modernist Style

Mike Joyce has been creating amazingly cool CD covers, music packaging, and posters for years through his work at Stereotype Design. His side project has been Swissted, his effort to recreate classic punk rock gig posters from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, in Swiss Modernist style. Now there's a brilliant collection of the best of these posters in book form.

With Swissted, Joyce takes the raw, ragged xeroxed posters that he loved in his youth growing up outside Albany, NY, and reimagines them using only Akzidenz Grotesk medium lowercase type and graphic elements. It's a typography and design geek's dream! Bands like Fear, the Germs, Social Distortion, Black Flag, and the Minutement are given precise, geometric treatments, complete with opening acts and gig dates and locations. Joyce also includes homages to more mainstream and new wave bands like the Clash, R.E.M., and the Smiths, but you can see his heart lies with the thrashing sounds (and funky poster design) of hardcore punk rock.

Poll: Is Businessweek's Cover

Poll: Is Businessweek's Cover "Offensive"?

Controversy has been brewing all week over a cover created by Richard Turley and his team at Bloomberg Businessweek. The February 25, 2013 cover, titled "The Great American Housing Rebound" features an illustration by Andres Guzman depicting an African-American family celebrating in a house stuffed with piles of cash.

The NAACP's Dedrick Muhammad told New York the cover was "racist and a mischaracterization. They are clearly racializing the issue by having mostly Blacks and Latinos--possibly only Blacks and Latinos--benefitting."

According to the New York article, the dust up first erupted this morning after Matthew Yglesias at Slate wrote about the cover (in an article titled "Businessweek Warns that Minorities May Be Buying Houses Again") and suggested that the magazine "ought to be ashamed."

Soon after that post went up, the Twittersphere was in an outcry over the offending image, with thousands of tweets calling for an explanation of just how the cover made it to print. By this afternoon, even Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley was calling the cover art "racist" and "outrageous."

Bloomberg Businessweek editor Josh Tyrangiel has since offered an apology.

Now it's your turn to weigh in. How do you feel about this cover?
