The Process: Boston Magazine's Recent Redesign

The Process: Boston Magazine's Recent Redesign

Boston magazine debuted a redesign with it's November issue, and Design Director Brian Struble was kind enough to give us the backstory to the whole process:

SPD:  What was the original impetus for the redesign?
BRIAN:  The magazine knew they wanted a redesign before I was even hired. When I was interviewing for the job, they asked me what my plan would be. I submitted an outline for where I wanted to take the redesign and the magazine as a whole, and they hired me with the idea that we would work together on making it a reality...

An Interview with Fortune Creative Director Brandon Kavulla

An Interview with Fortune Creative Director Brandon Kavulla

This is an excerpt from an interview I conducted earlier this year with Fortune creative director Brandon Kavulla. The interview appears in the new issue of Gym Class Magazine, "the magazine about magazines." You can see more of Gym Class, at Magculture, which describes the publication as "a gloriously mad 32-page psychedelic comic book format featuring commissioned illustrations." At the time of the interview Kavulla had just left his job as creative director of Wired and had not yet been hired by Fortune.

In 1997 I was hired as design director at Vibe magazine. I knew legendary photo director George Pitts from our days working together at Entertainment Weekly. And he gave me a good rundown of what to expect. What I found in the middle of a bustling office of young hip-hopper and urban style-istas was a power-packed surfer-type dude who looked like he had just wandered in from Cali. That was Brandon Kavulla, the art director, who I soon learned had a laser focus and a passion for magazine design that totally belied his laid-back dude look.

In those Vibe days, we all worked in tiny offices with big glass windows on the front side. Brandon would lock himself inside and go to work, blasting Van Halen, Nine Inch Nails, and all kinds of hip-hop. Soon pages would start to appear on the floor, and in a few hours there would be dozens of feature layouts in as many different styles. Brandon would come out of his laboratory, show me a couple of brilliant versions, and then go back to work on the next story. I've never seen someone who loved his work so much. It didn't matter whether he was creating page designs for stories on U.S. Presidential candidate Bill Bradley, rockers Rage Against the Machine, or Wu Tang Clan member Old Dirty Bastard. Brandon attacked each graphic challenge with hearty enthusiasm and great love. It was remarkable to watch, and it was impossible not to get caught up in his energy.

My Favo(u)rite Magazine: LIFE, November 1983

MyFavouriteMagazine5813134538.png
Earlier this year I was asked to contribute to a project called "My Favo(u)rite magazine" to help raise money for our dear friend and comrade Bob Newman who was seriously injured, and is now on the long road to recovery. At the time I was going through the last stages of cancer with Muggs, my 11 year old Boston Terrier and was unable to pull it together in time. About a month ago I realized I could still contribute by posting my own story about my favorite magazine on SPD in effect extending the story of Bob's continuing recovery. By pure coincidence my favorite magazine has quite a lot in common with a pretty significant anniversary happening this weekend.

"Namaste" to Tim J Luddy of Mother Jones

When the editors of Mother Jones recently announced that longtime creative director Tim J Luddy was leaving the magazine "to build his yoga-teaching practice," it sounded to some like the West Coast equivalent of "spending more time with his family" or "pursuing other interests." In this case, though, the story is true. Luddy, who has been creative director for six years, is a longtime yoga practitioner and an RYT-200 certified teacher, even leading the Mother Jones staff in Down Dogs in the magazine's conference room.

That may explain the sense of zen calmness that Luddy has brought to the magazine's design and production. He has continued the Mother Jones tradition as a showcase of smart, provocative illustration, while giving the design a look of grace and elegance. His cover designs remind me a lot of the first years of Mother Jones, when it was art directed by Louise Kollenbaum. The covers lean heavily on illustration, but tend to be understated, often humorous, provocative without being off-putting, and always smart and engaging.

For more on Luddy at Mother Jones, see this SPD Three Questions With interview (it also gives you a sense of Luddy's personal style).

The good news is that as Luddy builds his new yoga teaching website and prepares for a yoga retreat in Hawaii, the new creative director of Mother Jones will be Ivylise Simones, former art director of The Village Voice and Rides magazine, among others. Meanwhile, I can think of a few magazine staffs who could benefit from some of Luddy's calming yoga practice! We here at SPD say "namaste" to Tim, and wish him the best in his new career.

Here are 10 of our favorite Mother Jones covers created by Luddy, plus a hilarious "47 percent" wine label designed in honor of a Mother Jones custom blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. (According to Luddy, the wine is much better than the Presidential candidate who inspired it!)

How to F***Up a Perfectly Fine Magazine and Look Good While Trying: 13 Esquire Contents Pages

Wednesday, November 20 at the Helen Mills Theater in NYC, the Society of Publication Designers is presenting its latest SpeakEasy, How to F*** Up a Perfectly Fine Magazine and Look Good While Trying: An Evening with David Curcurito, Design Director of Esquire & Friends.

In addition to Curcurito, Esquire art director Stravinski Pierre and photo director Mike Norseng will also join in to, as Curcurito says "give insight into what it truly takes to give Esquire its unique look and feel."

Leading up to next Wednesday's speakeasy, SPD is presenting a series of Esquire page designs and images selected from Curcurito & Company's very impressive body of work. One of the signatures of the current Esquire design has been the way that the art and edit team have reworked and reimagined traditional front-of-book pages, including the TOC and letters to the editor. Here we've got a baker's dozen of our favorite (and very imaginative) Esquire contents pages from the past eight years.

Not to be Missed: Richard Avedon's "Women" at L.A.'s Gagosian Gallery

GQ's Director of Photography Dora Somosi fills us in on this inspiring new exhibit of Richard Avedon's work in Los Angeles.
--
Looking at photographs is my job and I do it all day, so it's rare that I am emotionally overwhelmed by a gallery show. Sure, there have been occasions when a museum retrospective has left me in awe -- but a gallery show? Usually they're so much smaller, highlighting one specific moment in a career, and so the experience, for me, tends to be more educational than emotional.
But then I went to Richard Avedon's show currently on display on the Gagosian Gallery in LA, and the moment I walked in I knew that this space was meant to show his work, and that it might not be possible to pull off a better curatorial arrangement of this particular body of work, titled simply, Women.

Prior to joining Bon Appétit, he worked at Lloyd&Co and AR New York, where his clients included the iconic american fashion labels Banana Republic, Eddie Bauer, as well as the international luxury brand Moët & Chandon.

Cybele is a partner at Ligature (ligaturenyc.com), a design studio based in New York City.  Most recently, Cybele and her team completed a redesign of Martha Stewart Living debuting with its July/August 2013 issue.  Previously, she worked on the relaunch of Condé Nast's Brides magazine. Curcurito says of the event, "I want to keep it interactive and loud with lots of swearing." That sounds like our kind of evening! We'll be in the front row.

Curcurito has helmed the visual team at Esquire for over eight years, working with editor David Granger to make it one of the most potent and smartest-looking magazines in the business. Curcurito has a gonzo design style honed at places like The Source and Complex that has given Esquire a wonderful sense of energy, vitality, and engagement.

In addition to Curcurito, Esquire art director Stravinski Pierre and photo director Mike Norseng will also join in to, as Curcurito says "give insight into what it truly takes to give Esquire its unique look and feel."

Leading up to next Wednesday's speakeasy, SPD will be presenting a series of Esquire page designs and images selected from Curcurito & Company's very impressive body of work. We're starting with a baker's dozen of our favorite Esquire covers, designed by David Curcurito over the past eight years.

Show Us Your Copy of My Favo(u)rite Magazine, Pt. 2

My Favo(u)rite Magazine is the benefit project for art director Bob Newman, organized by Jeremy Leslie and Andrew Losowsky. Following Bob's serious accident in March, Jeremy and Andrew reached out to a stellar cast of magazine makers, including Florian Bachleda, Luke Hayman, Josh Klenert, Arem Duplessis, Rudy VanderLans, Richard Turley, Tom Brown, Tim Leong, Matt Willey, Mario Garcia, Andy Cowles, Dirk Barnett, Simon Esterson, Joe Zeff, and many more. The result was a collection of 88 art directors, editors, illustrators, and other visual publication creators, with covers and commentary on their favorite magazines. It's a magazine lover's delight, and all the proceeds go to help Bob defray medical bills and living expenses while he continues his recovery.

To promote the magazine, a series of Bob's supporters have been taking snapshots of themselves holding My Favo(u)rite Magazine, in locations ranging from Rio to Tokyo to London to Mexico, and of course, New York City. It also has popped up in a number of magazine offices, including Billboard and The Economist in London. Last month we collected 20 of our favorite snapshots here at SPD; now we've got a second collection of 20 more.

Lollipop Magazine Brings a Unique Take on F1 Racing

Lollipop Magazine Brings a Unique Take on F1 Racing

We here at SPD HQ love when that magical combination of imagery, design and words compels you to buy and read a magazine even if you don't care about the actual topic. A recent example of this for us is Lollipop magazine, a collaboration between Brooklyn-based photographer Joshua Paul and British Columbia-based art director Tom Brown of TBA+D. As the cover states, Lollipop is "a magazine for Grand Prix enthusiasts", but we think even non-racing fans will be enthused by what they see. Read on for the backstory and a sampling of pages from the launch issue.
