Reader's Digest Gets a Fresh New Redesign

Reader's Digest recently completed a fantastic new redesign of the classic American brand. Starting with an updated look for the cover, Design Director Dean Abatemarco and crew redesigned virtually every page of the magazine and its website, tablet, and iphone editions.

SPD recently spoke with Dean about this major design update. He gives us some insight into the process and a peek at some of his team's work on the January issue.

The seeds for this latest redesign of Reader's Digest magazine were sown almost two years ago, when the former creative director, Bob Newman, and I were working on a project for our 90th anniversary. We were going through the RD archives and were both struck by how simple and elegant the design of RD was in its glory days of the '30s, '40s, and '50s. So when the redesign began in earnest earlier this year, part of the mission we had in mind was to return to the spirit of the classic RD look, but through a modern lens.

Kathy Ryan- Office Romance for Whisper Editions

Whisper Editions is pleased to announce it's twelve edition- four six-by-six prints from Kathy Ryan's enchanting Instagram study of life inside the New York Times building. One of the most preeminent photography editors of our day, Ryan, the longtime photography director of The New York Times Magazine, did not herself begin taking pictures until the advent of Instagram. When she did, the world took notice. Ryan's series of still-life work and portraiture, "Office Romance," quickly caught the attention of 40,000 followers and counting.

The Visual Voice of the Huffington Post

The Huffington iPad magazine has been publishing a series of smart, engaging covers on their weekly editions, with photo illustration imagery created predominantly in-house by designer Troy Dunham and photo researcher Wendy George. The team has been dubbed #TrendyMagic by creative director Josh Klenert, who estimates that they've illustrated 75% of the magazine's recent covers. "The magazine highlights the best of the Huffington Post," says Klenert, "which means we work on a tight production cycle (and a limited budget) that's in tune with the speed of our website."

Every Good Boy (and Girl) Deserves Favour(ite)!

My Favo(u)rite Magazine is a benefit magazine project created by Andrew Losowsky and Magculture's Jeremy Leslie to help our friend and colleague Bob Newman after his serious accident earlier this year. All proceeds from the project will go to help Bob pay medical bills and sustain him and his family while he regains his health. My Favo(u)rite Magazine is a true collectors' item, filled with contributions from 88 magazine makers from around the world, each describing their favo(u)rite magazine.

As part of the promotion for the project, over 100 people sent in photographs of themselves holding My Favo(u)rite Magazine (or took pics of it in offices, studios, cafes, and in front of famous landmarks in cities ranging from Tokyo to Rio to London to Helsinki). Here are 25 of our favo(u)rites, featuring 61 people (and one dog!).

My Favo(u)rite Magazine is available in printed or PDF format from Magculture.

RIP, GreenSource

GreenSource magazine ceased publication in print with it's November/December issue. Creative Director (and SPD President) Francesca Messina recaps highlights of the magazine's design.
