The SPD Magazine of the Year: Gold Medal Magazines & Art Directors

The SPD Magazine of the Year: Gold Medal Magazines & Art Directors

Here's the second of our series of infographics celebrating the history and winners of the SPD Magazine of the Year award.

In 1997, SPD introduced the Magazine of the Year award, a recognition of the publication that featured the top all-around design, imagery, graphics, illustration, and general visual magic. The first winner was 2wice, art directed by Abbott Miller. In the years since, the list of winning magazines and art directors reads like a who's who of publication design: The New York Times Magazine, Details, GQ, Martha Stewart Kids, New York, Bloomberg Businessweek, Wired, and art directors Arem Duplessis, Janet Froelich, Fred Woodward, Patrick Mitchell, Debra Bishop, Luke Hayman, Rockwell Harwood, John Korpics, Richard Turley, and Scott Dadich. The Magazine of the Year is the ultimate SPD award, an acknowledgement by the visual community of the very best in publication design.

In 1997, SPD debuted the Magazine of the Year award, a best-of honor voted on by everyone who was a judge at the annual design competition. It is a recognition of the best magazine of the year, the one with the supreme all-around design, imagery, graphics, illustration, and general visual magic. The first winner was 2wice, art directed by Abbott Miller. Roger Black's Redesign of the Hong Kong Tattler

Roger Black's Redesign of the Hong Kong Tattler

Here are some of the highlights from the recent Roger Black-directed redesign of Hong Kong Tattler, a luxury, style, and lifestyle magazine. As group creative director of Edipresse Media in Hong Kong, Roger launched this redesign in March, and will carry it through seven other Tattler editions across Asia in the near future.

For more on Hong Tattler and the redesign, check out this nifty video. For the redesign Roger turned to Font Bureau and type designer David Jonathan Ross to revive a classic typeface, Forma, which was originally created in the mid-1960s by a team led by Aldo Novarese. The Font Bureau blog has a detailed (and properly obsessive) background story on the creation of the new font. It's a great look at the revival and redesign of a classic typeface and how it was developed.

Complete digital copies of Hong Kong Tattler can be downloaded via Magzter.

On the turn page we've got a slideshow of other pages from the Hong Kong Tattler redesign.

Thanks to our terrific judges Rob Hewitt, Fred Woodward, Deanna Filippo, Kristin Fitzpatrick, Jeff Griffith and Todd Detwiler for their time judging our 2014 Student Design Competition last Friday. We'll be announcing the winners on the student blog this week, so stay tuned!
• Our next student event takes place Tuesday, 3/18, featuring an awesome line-up of speakers sharing their job and freelancing experiences. If you teach a class or have an intern or junior designer, be sure to send them our way!
• We have a new blog series called "5 Questions For..." featuring a different professional each time talking about their job title and what it entails. If you'd like to be considered for a feature post, email us at spdstudentoutreach@gmail.com.

And there's lots more planned beyond that, so even if you're not a student, be sure to follow us on our blog, Facebook and Twitter for all the latest. Thanks for your support! Go Team SPD!
