Join Our Super-Cool, Incredibly-Talented, Hugely-Influential Amazingly Wonderful Group of Pros: We're SPD!

So the Gala was totally awesome, right? (If you haven't already seen all the pics, check them out now). We got tons of great entries in our new SPD 49 competition categories. Our speaker events have been a big hit (check out the Esquire event and video events online now if you missed 'em!). Our newest SPD 48 annual is just hitting mailboxes now (share your #SPDshelfie on Instagram or Twitter!). And our Student Design Competition winners are just about to start their prize internships. All this incredible stuff AND our blog (more "Covers of the Day" and other great series to come) and student programming too ... what's not to like?

If you've enjoyed any or all of these, why not become a member of SPD now, or renew your lapsed membership. Besides getting a ton of discounts and other great benefits (that we'll be adding to throughout the coming year), we can't do all these cool things without you. So join us and let us know if you have ideas on how to make SPD even better!

Tell Us a Little About Yourself... Take our 2014 Member Survey!

If you're an SPD Member (and if you're not, why not join now?), have you taken our 2014 Member Survey yet? We promise it only takes a few minutes! But the info is a HUGE help to us as we plan and produce future events and opportunities.

It really does take only 3-5 minutes, and it's totally anonymous! You DO have to log-in to the SPD member site to access the survey, but after that your answers are then saved anonymously and not linked to your profile at all.

If you enjoyed the Gala or any of our speaker events, or liked the new competition categories, or appreciate our student outreach efforts, and you want to see them all continue and get even better, then...

Thank you so much, we can't do what we do without you!

Illustration Age Showcases New Inspiring Work from Five Magazines

Illustration Age Showcases New Inspiring Work from Five Magazines

For the week of April 28-May 2, the Illustration Age website featured illustrations from five diverse magazines. Guest edited by Robert Newman, the idea behind the series was to look at magazines that use illustration as a major component of their design and content.

The five magazines that were exhibited: Eight by Eight, Anorak, Reader's Digest, The Baffler, and The New Yorker, represent a wide variety of genres, audiences, formats, and styles of illustration. But for all of them, illustration is an essential part of the visual identity of the magazine, not just a way to decorate or accompany stories, but an integral part of the regular conversation that is carried on with the readers. The editors and art directors of these magazines are passionate supporters of illustration, each with their own unique aesthetic.

This series is an inspiring look at new and established illustrators and a tribute to some great design and art direction.
