From the SPD Archives: The Judges for Publication Design 30, 1995

The judging for the 30th SPD publication design awards was held in late January, 1995, at Parson's School of Design in New York City. The competition chairs were Diana LaGuardia, design director of Conde Nast Traveler and Audrey Razgaitis, art director of Conde Nast Traveler. The two chairs gathered a stellar group of 36 judges, including magazine art directors and photo directors, plus some prestigious studio designers and even an editor. These photographs of all the judges by Steven Freeman were published in the SPD Gala 30 program, on May 5, 1995.

Audrey Razgaitis: I was invited to be co-chair by Diana LaGuardia. Unfortunately for her, I was probably not much help! She was the mastermind, I just did what was asked since I was busy with kids and working. My kids were so little at the time and I was majorly sleep deprived. But time moves on! My daughter is now working as a web designer for the Travel Channel. Although Travel Channel is based in DC, she works remotely, and lives in Portland, Maine. My son is a senior at James Madison University.

I do remember carrying lots of pages and placing things on long tables at the judging. SPD Executive Director Bride Whelan was in charge of logistics. I remember that she made coffee the night before and plugged in a huge extension cord and a timer.

Diana initiated a "Best in Show" award, which was won by Rolling Stone, and presented the first B.W. Honeycutt award as well, to Soo Jung Lee of SVA.

Since the Publication Design 30 judging Audrey Razgaitis has been the art director of Time For Kids, creative director of InTouch Weekly, and creative drector of Guideposts Publications. She is currently working on corporate branding, logo design, and storyboarding a book series for a new children's book company, Egg In The Hole. See her website for more information.
