Pub 45: Student Competition

Pub 45: Student Competition

THE STUDENT COMPETITION & THE ADOBE SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF B.W. HONEYCUTT - Established in 1995, this competition honors the life and work of B.W. Honeycutt. It recognizes exceptional design by students with awards and three cash prizes: the Adobe Scholarship in Honor of B.W. Honeycutt, the first-place prize of $2500; second-place prize of $1000; and a third-place prize of $500. The top winners also received summer internships magazines in New York City. Chaired by Ian Doherty, Art Director at Food Network Magazine, this juried competition acknowledges the student designer and the teachers who develop their unique talents.

In recognizing the promise of each student, Adobe affirms the creative possibilities inherent in the individual. Throughout its partnership with SPD, Adobe is helping shape the next generation of creative professionals. Together we are building the groundwork that will sustain and further artistic accomplishments within the editorial design community.

Pub 45: Spots

Chair Matthew Lenning led the 23rd Annual SPOTS competition, championing the little illustrations that say so much. From hundreds of entries, the judges selected a class of illustrations that do an excellent job of amplifying the editorial message, from a wide spectrum of publications. Winners are featured in a visual index here, and celebrated more extensively in a very limited-edition book published biannually, The SPOTS Book, showcasing both the illustrations and smaller versions of the original editorial pages that featured the work.

Pub 45: Competition Credits

The SPD Annual Judging Weekend is a tremendous event bringing together the most experienced and admired creatives working with editorial content today, challenging them to sift through thousands of entries in just a few days to find the best of the best you see featured in this book. In order to accomplish so much, in such a short time, requires the outstanding effort of so many--once again, however, SPD is blessed to have outstanding support from many, and they make it look easy. Debra Bishop, Creative Director, More, and Casey Tierney, Photo Director, Real Simple, (Co-Chairs), Jeremy LaCroix, Creative Director, CBS Interactive (Online Chair), Bruce Ramsay (Magazine of the Year Chair), and Nancy Stamatopoulos (Competition Coordinator) extend an enormous thank-you on behalf of SPD to all the judges and volunteers for their support in making the judging happen this year during a very wintry weekend in January at FIT.

National Geographic's Gold Medal Award for Photography

As excited as we were about all the amazing work shown at the Gala, both from 2009 and the 45 years of work leading up to it, we're very sorry to note a duplication error made in the Gala program: the credits for National Geographic's Gold Medal news/reportage photography winner from December mistakenly reprinted the credit information for the Nat Geo Medal Finalist from February in the same category, omitting the Gold Medal-winning team deserving the glory! Corrected credits, and beautiful work, for both are included after the jump... … MORE

Pub 45 After Party/After Thought

What a night it was. Hosted by the gorgeous duo, CD of More Deb Bishop and PD of Real Simple (as well as SPD Pres.) Casey Tierney, which made this year's Pub 45 awards a very special one, there were kudos, cheers, great drinking and dining and all in good humor... and to top it all, those who made it to the after party got to kick back and relax (some even racked it up for a game or two of pool.)
A big thank you goes out to our after-hours host, Pound & Pence for providing the good times, and a special thank you to the gala 45's DJ George of Five Star DJ Entertainment for keeping the grooves spinning all night.

More images to follow in the coming days, so stay tuned.

See you all at our next event!

Rare Specimen No. 8
Beauty Solutions

Stephen Sullivan, freelance photographer, was a guest speaker at SPD's March [Design] Madness. He told us he was the "go-to guy," the "trouble shooter," always called in when they need a pinch hitter who works best under duress. Imagine: the celebrity with only 10 minutes to spare, or the store space that's still under construction but had to become some beautiful backdrop, or the 37 stills to shoot in an 8 hour day...… MORE

Rare Specimen No. 7
Megan Caponetto

"We're going to need to call Megan for this."
That comes up often here at Men's Health, as it did at Best Life whenever brainstorming sessions produced a potentially cool (crazy?) idea...that we had no idea how on God's green Earth it could be done...and we knew Megan would make it a much better idea than we could have ever imagined. You know the saying: "You get what you put in front of the camera"? Megan always seems to put genius in front of it. Enjoy some samples after the jump you may or may not have seen! Rare Specimen No 6
Folks who act on their stupid, brilliant weed-infused day dreams

Once I hit the beaches of Mexico, I'll finally possess the time required to fully obsess over the mad genius of this precious little paperback limited edition of If Drawings Were Photographs by Rob Matthews and Tom Edwards. A gentle little sparkle of a collaboration described in the front page only as "Tom gave drawings to Rob and Rob tried to make them into photographs", my #225/500 edition arrived in the mail from the UK today and has since consumed me with thoughts of how I can quit my job and just pursue all my absurdist fantasy art projects and make thoughtful little books documenting each and every one of them.  But I just took a peek at my dormant 401k and snapped right back into tightly kerning the words FLAT ABS FAST for the 2 millionth time, right... where... I... belong. Sigh. … MORE

"The Cipriani's Experience"

Deb Bishop and I, along with a few Pub 45 pals, wandered down south yesterday for a tasting at Cipriani's Wall Street in preparation for the Gala. We blocked out an hour from our schedules and expected to sample a few bites back in a sweaty kitchen where we'd make decision like, "Chicken or beef?" We were oh so wrong. We arrived and were promptly escorted to a private dining room with lovely place settings for us, chilled Bellinis waiting (part of "the Cipriani's experience" we're told) and each adorned with 6 varietals of wine to consider.  A parade of delicious plates ensued, each dish more amazing than the one before. And 2 1/2 hours later (sorry, Real Simple!) we found ourselves stuffed, sated and, well, a bit sauced. But also convinced that choosing Chips (as we now call it) for this year's Gala may just be the best decision we made all year.

The menu choices will remain a surprise but we hope you'll join us May 7th so you too can get "the Cipriani's Experience"...SPD style! You should RSVP HERE.

Fellow Photo Editors,

How many email promos, entreaties, introductions and newsletters do you receive on a daily basis from photographers? 15? 37 maybe? Endless right? We love (insert big hearts here) photographers. Our life's work is to exalt their merits, support their every creative whim and beg to give them proper budgets. However, these blind solicitations we receive rarely ever surprise or even come close to exciting our core sensibilities.  That is until a couple months ago when I received an email from one Matilde Montanari...

SPD Magazine of the Year: Who's the Rarest One of All?

Some rare specimens can be pinned, others mounted, and others still: stuffed. Our rarest specimen suffers none of these indignities. Ours is published. Ours is Magazine of the Year.

Entering Magazine of the Year is entirely FREE. Simply enter any other category and you're automatically entitled to present your gorgeous specimen (in the form of three issues) for analysis by a scholarly panel of esteemed academicians.

The first day of judging is entirely devoted to MoY. Every judge will see your submission and, like last year, only ONE magazine will be declared that rarest of rare: Magazine of the Year.

Show off your colors. Take this once-a-year opportunity to put a representative sample of your hard work and field research in front of the experts, your peers.
