Back to School--for an MFA in Design

Back to School--for an MFA in Design

I met Ron Gabriel in the fall 2009 semester of my Just Type class in the MFA program at the School of Visual Arts, where I teach. He looked familiar to me, and I soon figured out why. A longtime magazine designer at a host of New York-based publications, Ron's most recent job before returning to the classroom was as Creative Director for the international editions of Hearst Magazines. Small world, indeed.

I was curious to find out more about what made Ron decide to go back to school in the middle of a successful career in publication design, and thought you might be interested, too. So Ron took a moment from a Ramen Noodle and coffee-fueled day to answer a few questions...

The Wilde Years [at SPD]

The Wilde Years [at SPD]

If you're an SVA graphic design department alum, then you remember sitting in the darkened 23rd Street amphitheater, hoping that your work would appear on screen in Richard's class. Paula Scher: Raising the Bar

Paula Scher: Raising the Bar

In the late eighties, Paula Scher came to SVA to teach portfolio.

When the semester began, the other students in Paula's class were Gail Anderson, Drew Hodges, Jackie Murphy, Jackie Seow, Mario Pulice, Archie Ferguson, Deb Bishop, Richard Baker, Frank Garjulio, Alexander Knowlton, Syndi Becker and a host of other current industry greats. Over the next twenty years of Paula's SVA teaching career, the sheer number of other stars to be taught by Paula would be legendary. This was a time at The School of Visual Arts when Richard Wilde had brought a host of new and visionary instructors on board: Carin Goldberg, Henrietta Condak, Louise Fili and Chris Austopchuk. Even Richard Wilde, Chairman of the Advertising and Graphic Design Department, will admit that it was the dawn of a new era in how Graphic Design and Typography would be taught at SVA.… MORE
Back to School

Back to School

I've been teaching at SVA for a really long time. I actually can't even remember how long, but it's got to be at least 16 or 50 years now. Sometimes it's great, and sometimes it's inconvenient. Occasionally, it's incredibly frustrating. But that said, I wouldn't take back the many hours I've invested in the classroom and only wish more designers taught, too. Here's why:
