Visiting Assistant Professor, Visual Journalism

The Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno, seeks a talented and curious multi-disciplinary design evangelist, a proven professional with a burning desire to teach. Someone who'll open the eyes of our students across the curriculum to the possibilities and responsibilities of great design. Both in theory and hands-on experiences. Someone who teaches from the heart, inspires a culture of aesthetics, who can nurture critical thinkers adept in the application of essential design skills and principles. Professional experience should include a design background in a variety of media, including online. We also will look for demonstrated ability to teach, either through recognition for mentoring or formal teaching. The position is for a one or (optionally) two-year appointment. A search is anticipated the following year (F-2013) for a tenure-track position to begin F-2014, and the candidate selected to fill the initial position will be invited to apply. The Reynolds School of Journalism is located in northern Nevada on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno, within sight of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Women's Health Summer Internship

Women's Health magazine is currently looking for an enthusiastic art intern for the Summer 2012 semester. This would be an unpaid internship running June 6-August 17 for academic credit. A commitment of 3-5 days a week is required. Duties will include assisting the art department and designing layouts for FOB sections. Must be proficient in InDesign.

Freelance Tablet Production Artist

Men's Health is seeking a highly detail oriented and creative freelance production person to work on our digital iPad edition. Responsibilities include rethinking print layouts for the iPad interactive digital edition and working with designers to conceptualize for the iPad. Must have extensive knowledge of CS5: Photoshop, InDesign, DPS (Sprint 19) and K4 as well as a passion for tablet design and functionality. Minimum 3 years production experience at a publication. Art Director

To lead the editorial design department of the nation's largest monthly city magazine, an award-winning perfect-bound glossy. RESPONSIBILITIES • Work closely with editors to create and oversee the overall look of the magazine, making it vibrant, fresh, and smart for a sophisticated reader • Supervise two staff designers and the staff photo editor; hire and manage art interns and freelancers as needed • Design each month's cover and some feature stories; oversee/approve the design of the rest of the magazine and all the photos, illustrations, and graphics that appear in it • Manage the art and photo department budget • Coordinate with the production and editorial departments to make sure deadlines are met • Make sure the magazine's overall brand, including its website and other digital products, has a consistent visual presentation.

Award-winning, technology magazine IEEE Spectrum is offering a paid (12 weeks,starting in May 2012) Photo internship in their NYC office. The ideal candidate must be creative with excellent communications and organizational skills. A strong interest in photography, magazines and technology is a must. Responsibilities will include photo research, silhouetting photos for print and apps, color correction and retouching. The candidate will work with the Photo Editor and Senior Art Director. Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop required. Previous internship experience and web skills a huge plus. Candidate must be available to commit a minimum of 25 hours a week and either be enrolled in a college degree program where he or she has maintained a passing grade point average or have graduated and be within twelve months of that graduation from an accredited college or university.

Washingtonian Magazine Art Internship

Washingtonian Magazine, located in Washington, DC is currently looking for an enthusiastic art intern for the Summer 2012 semester. An ideal candidate has a strong interest in editorial design and a love for the DC area. The candidate must be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). Duties will include assisting the art department with designing layouts for FOB and BOB sections, creating graphics for washingtonian.com, and attending art/photo meetings to discuss planning for each month's issue. Previous experience at a magazine and/or knowledge of K4 is a plus, but not required.

Nomad Editions currently publishes three weekly digital magazines--Uncorked (wine), BodySmart (fitness/diet) and Real Eats (food)--and has many other mobile projects in development.

Job Requirements: Full command of CS5 InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Mag+ or WoodWing experience required. Design Production Associate, Martha Stewart Weddings

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is currently seeking a Design Production Associate to join the Weddings team for a short-term 6-week total freelance contract. Under the guidance of the Managing Editor and Design Director, and working along with the Art and Edit teams, the candidate will play an integral part in the workflow and production of the print and iPad versions of the magazine. Responsibilities: Working with art directors and editors to tighten layouts and type on both print and iPad editions for release of art and composed pages to outside vendors. Work with Design Production team to regulate procedural standards and quality measures. Convert print layouts to iPad format, with careful attention to style sheets. Setup an array of interactive elements to work on the iPad (including but not limited to links and multi-state objects). Test iPad interactive functionality and create folios for publishing, Requirements: 5+ years' production experience in a magazine environment. iPad production experience is required Expertise in InDesign CS5. Working knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator to correctly assemble electronic files and trouble shoot any problems so that they retain their integrity. Working knowledge of the K4 system is helpful. Must be skilled at tightening layouts, linking images, and creating articles. Should have and meticulous type skills: including kerning and ragging.
