Associate Art Director, Western Living & Vancouver Magazine

Position Summary Reporting to the Art Director, the Associate Art Director is critically involved in the creation and implementation of the magazine's visual "language," look and identity. He/she participates in all creative planning and implementation, as well as helping with conceptualization, layout and design for all sections of the book. Responsibilities • Participating in all planning, strategy, post-op and brainstorming meetings • Generating art, photography and illustration concepts that will create compelling, engaging stories while at the same time reinforcing the magazine's mandate, philosophy and profile • Design feature and upfront editorial layouts for Western Living, Vancouver magazine and our Special Interest Publications for approval by the Art Director and Editor in Chief • Act as art director for Special Interest Publications • Work with the editorial department to make modifications to designed pages as needed • Schedule and assign work to freelance illustrators and photographers • Attend previews for photo shoots and finalize details with photographers • Art direct photo shoots and problem solve as needed • Oversee the production of editorial pages and proof digital images to ensure colour and retouching accuracy • Send and receive digital files and communicate with production when required • Modify and approve final pages • Work with promotional department to oversee the design in-house ads, promotional requests and other art related projects • Oversee image content for e-newsletters of both magazines. • Train and direct interns and freelancers in the art department systems and administration • Conduct photo research as required

Craft Editor- Milwaukee

Responsible for the craft content that appears in magazines and books. Primary responsibility is on Country Woman magazine and Taste of Home books. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Creates crafts from start to finish that are appropriate for publication. Produces accompanying instructions. • Writes, rewrites and edits craft instructions submitted by readers or third-party sources for publication. Works with these sources as needed to assure directions are clear. • Works with editors to plan and execute craft content for assigned publications. • Is a key participant in craft photo shoots. • Participates in craft contest judging and assesses merits of different entries. • Is capable of writing in proper voice for assigned projects. Ensures copy is accurate and consistent in quality. • Participates in related digital activities, such as answering reader questions as needed in online forums. • Takes the lead on the creative direction for crafts. Keeps abreast of trends and new ideas in the crafting community. • Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS • Strong knowledge, background and interest in crafting. Knowledge and skills in sewing, quilting, knitting, and papercraft are essential. Also must have the ability to tackle a broad range of crafting techniques and mediums, such as painting, crocheting, woodcraft, needlepoint, embroidery and others. • Bachelor's degree, preferably in a communications-related field. • 2-5 years proven writing/editing or instructional skills in a craft-related setting. • Strong knowledge of table décor and general home décor and a demonstrated understanding of the principles of design and color. • Excellent decision-making skills, including ability to select appropriate content for publication. • Attention to detail and ability to write clear and accurate crafting instructions for publication. • Strong computer skills. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to interact well with internal staff at all levels and external sources. • Ability to organize and plan work to meet deadlines. • An understanding and appreciation of the audience. • Enthusiasm and a desire to be part of a talented and fast-moving team.

Photo Editor

NYLON and NYLON Guys magazines are seeking a photo editor, title commensurate with experience. Responsibilities include managing all aspects of shoot production, including booking photographers for covers, FOB, and features in both studio and on locaton. Video Producer/Editor (Perm)

The Digital Designer is responsible for conceptualization and design of solutions from concept to completion. Candidate should have strong management skills and understanding of layout, typography and color theory, especially applied to web, and digital media. Marie Claire Art Department Internship

Marie Claire is looking for interns in the art department for the Winter/Spring 2014 semester. This is a non-paid internship and for school credit only. Candidates must receive school credit and be able to commit to at least 3 full days a week for our internship program at our New York office.

AARP Publications Intern Spring 2014

AARP Media, in Washington D.C., is currently seeking an art department intern for Spring 2014. Candidates must be senior level undergrad or grad students with print design skills enrolled in a fine arts or communications design program. Interest in typography and conceptual imaging skills are a must. Candidates will work directly with the art directors in the design and production of pages to run in the magazine as well as help sending out award submissions. The intern will also be working with the magazines photo editors to provide administrative support, learn effective techniques for researching high-quality imagery and gain experience in how photography assignments are directed. Other duties will include maintaining the editorial wall and participating in art meetings. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, and proficiency in MAC, Creative Suite (especially Indesign and Photoshop) and some knowledge of DPS. S/He should be enthusiastic and have the ability to juggle multiple projects under tight deadlines. We are looking for someone that is proactive and takes initiative on problem-solving issues.
