Freelance Art Director: Preservation
The National Trust for Historic, a nonprofit organization that works to save America's historic places, seeks an exceptionally talented and creative magazine designer for our quarterly magazine, Preservation, on a contract basis. We are currently soliciting competitive proposals for a fixed-price contract from firms or individuals that are qualified to art direct and design this award-winning publication. The art director will have proven experience in publication design, demonstrating sophisticated art direction, design, typography and photography. Responsibilities for this position include: conception, design and layout of 72-page issue's cover, features and department pages--on average 40 pages. Coordinates with the managing editor on the acquisition of photography and illustration. Ensures designs are forward looking, cutting edge and in line with the National Trust's brand. Supports a positive and effective team atmosphere, communicating clearly with National Trust staff. Follows assigned schedules. Works closely with creative director and editorial staff in communicating various design strategies, reporting directly to the Managing Editor on a day-to-day basis. We are looking for an enthusiastic editorial designer with the experience and energy to lead our small-but-talented art department to new heights. The art director will work with the editor in chief to shape the direction of the magazine's look, ensuring that it is in synch with the editorial vision and reflects the taste and style of the readership. The ideal candidate will have a passion for good design, a thorough knowledge of which publications are breaking new ground with their art direction, and a desire to best one's own work with each new issue. This person should have a proven track record of creating covers that drive newsstand sales. A keen eye for photography, exceptional typography skills, and the ability to create images using infographics or typography are all musts. You should be a gentle, inspiring leader (think: Mary Poppins), who can scrutinize the work of other designers and articulate what is needed to bring the layouts to the next level. A collaborative spirit is imperative. Experience: Five years of experience designing or art directing for a national or regional consumer magazine or B2B publication preferred. Work under the art direction of the senior designer. 3. Collaborate with both the production team and sales team to curate and design content. 4. Re-touch photography as needed. 5. Design both print and digital ads for clients as needed. 6. Design infographics and repurpose digital art for print. Logistics: 1. This position is freelance, commissioned and paid on a per project basis. 2. Design and production for each project spans 3 or 4 days. 3. Compensation ranges from $500-$1,000 for 3 to 4 days of work, depending on the size and scope of the project. (On average projects pay $600 or $800.) 4. Designers work on their own computers (must have own Adobe Creative Suite license) and backup files to Mediaplanet's server upon project completion. 5. While Mediaplanet's freelance team works in-house, infrequent exceptions can be made in advance to accommodate outside work or other commitments. 6. Award winning, monthly financial and lifestyle publication seeks a talented, detail oriented print and media designer.
The Art Director is responsible for the execution of a monthly publication from template to PDF file release to the printer. They are responsible for complete layout, file management, and pre-press of the final issue files. The Art Director is also responsible for maintaining and communicating the art, image, advertising and page specs to advertisers, photographers, and illustrators. The Art Director will work directly with the publisher for vendor selection and communication of issue concepts.
Addition duties include but not limited to ongoing evolution and redesign, creating and updating media kits and in-house advertising as well as some web advertising for the magazine. This candidate will also be responsible for uploading articles to the magazine website for publication on a monthly schedule.
