The National Trust for Historic, a nonprofit organization that works to save America's historic places, seeks an exceptionally talented and creative magazine designer for our quarterly magazine, Preservation, on a contract basis. We are currently soliciting competitive proposals for a fixed-price contract from firms or individuals that are qualified to art direct and design this award-winning publication. The art director will have proven experience in publication design, demonstrating sophisticated art direction, design, typography and photography. Responsibilities for this position include: conception, design and layout of 72-page issue's cover, features and department pages--on average 40 pages. This position is freelance, commissioned and paid on a per project basis. 2. Design and production for each project spans 3 or 4 days. 3. Compensation ranges from $500-$1,000 for 3 to 4 days of work, depending on the size and scope of the project. (On average projects pay $600 or $800.) 4. Designers work on their own computers (must have own Adobe Creative Suite license) and backup files to Mediaplanet's server upon project completion. 5. While Mediaplanet's freelance team works in-house, infrequent exceptions can be made in advance to accommodate outside work or other commitments. 6. Part-Time Senior Designer, FiveThirtyEight

The part-time Senior Designer assists the Art Director and Creative Director in the development of design and UX experience for the data journalism site, FiveThirtyEight. The Senior Designer will work with the creative team to produce visual companion to editorial narrative of the site, which may consist of illustration, design, video and photographic opportunities. The designer will also participate in the product development of the site, producing wireframes and prototypes to inform front-end style guides that improve the UX experience across desktop, tablet, and mobile platforms. This role requires broad knowledge and advanced skills in visual design, information architecture, user interface design, web standards, and a solid understanding of available client-side technologies, as well as an ability to work within a team of designers, editors, and developers to further brand recognition and editorial goals. This part-time position has a maximum of 29 hours per week, exact schedule to be worked out with the Manager.

Responsibilities

Be informed of the editorial schedule. Practice sound news judgment and understand design's role in effective storytelling.
Participates in wire framing, UX, and testing processes for digital property across platforms, working closely with product teams.
Participates in the development process for design, interface, interaction and experience related to respective products.
Creative partner with product, content and technology.
Fully embedded in the creative process, from conception to planning to hands on execution.

Basic Qualifications
A minimum of 3 years of digital design experience or 4 years print experience within an editorial environment.
Extensive knowledge of Adobe CS, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop.
Deep understanding of user interface, interaction, design and front end design across platforms.
Working knowledge of CSS, HTML 5, AfterEffects, Javascript, JQuery.

Art Director: Modern Trader

Award winning, monthly financial and lifestyle publication seeks a talented, detail oriented print and media designer.

 

The Art Director is responsible for the execution of a monthly publication from template to PDF file release to the printer. They are responsible for complete layout, file management, and pre-press of the final issue files. The Art Director is also responsible for maintaining and communicating the art, image, advertising and page specs to advertisers, photographers, and illustrators. The Art Director will work directly with the publisher for vendor selection and communication of issue concepts.

 

Addition duties include but not limited to ongoing evolution and redesign, creating and updating media kits and in-house advertising as well as some web advertising for the magazine. This candidate will also be responsible for uploading articles to the magazine website for publication on a monthly schedule.

Marie Claire Summer Art Intern

Marie Claire is looking for interns in the art department for Summer 2017. Candidates must have a strong interest in magazine design, photography, typography and love for fashion. Excellent communication and organizational skills are a must, plus the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. He/she should be resourceful, responsible and a creative problem-solver. The intern will assist in the daily workflow of the magazine. Under the guidance of the art department, the intern will experience the process of a national monthly magazine. This is the perfect position for a dynamic, self-motivated college student looking for hands-on experience.
