    The Graphic Designer creates communications and fund-raising collateral for the San Diego Zoo's Development/Membership Department. Designing printed materials, Web and electronic media projects, fund-raising graphics, signage, advertising, and other collateral are essential functions of the job. Applicants must be proficient in Adobe Creative Suites and Mac design programs, hand illustration, and project management. Knowledge of typography, color and other print processes, and layout/production is necessary. A degree in the graphic design field or equivalent specialized training and a minimum of 4 years of work experience in graphic design and illustration are essential. Selected candidate must be able to work and communicate effectively in a team environment. Final candidates must be able to provide a portfolio of their work.

  • Job Requirements: PRIMARY PURPOSE The Graphic Designer will perform all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects the Zoological Society’s mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Graphic Designer creates, updates, and implements graphic communications and branding standards for the Society, together with advertising, marketing, educational, interpretive graphics; and designs information for off-grounds signage, printed materials, and collateral applications. This position reports to the department Supervisor/Manager. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Communicates messages and information about the collection and the Society's mission through design and illustration •Plan and develops designs from concept •Oversees contract fabricators, installers, and assigned staff •Coordinates with department users regarding art and product development requirements •Develops, administers, and monitors assigned budgets as required •Evaluates vendor/contractor bids and maintains files for images and artwork to be accessed for future needs •Provides priority artwork to support unplanned needs such as events, advertising, collateral, meetings, and donor recognition •Stays abreast of technology developments in graphic design and applicable trends that may affect the Society’s branding and graphic standards REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES •Plans and develops designs from concept to completed artwork through the use of mockups, camera art, illustration, and computer-based graphic design systems •Oversees contract fabricators, installers, and assigned staff regarding specification adherence/changes and design development to assure an acceptable final design product •Designs and illustrates on- and off-grounds interpretive signage •Creates graphic and hand-drawn illustrations for variety of projects Designs and updates print media and advertising ANCILLARY FUNCTIONS Performs related duties and responsibilities as required. QUALIFICATIONS An Associate degree in Graphic Design, or equivalent specialized training, or proven knowledge of illustration, typography, offset/digital printing, and production. Requires considerable experience in graphic design and hand illustration; proficient Adobe Creative Suite design program; certification or equivalent specialized training in Macintosh design program is desirable; and must possess a valid California driver license. Knowledge of: • Typography • Illustration, offset/digital printing, and production Color and other print processes • Production • Copy writing, editing skills and photography are desired • Interpretive design and postal regulations are desirable • Natural science, conservation and the goals of zoological parks is desirable Ability to: • Use various computer programs • Work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment • Communicate effectively (verbal and written) • Work effectively in a team environment • Travel as needed WORKING ENVIRONMENT Work in a busy, creative, fast-paced, deadline-driven, and highly team-oriented office environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Ability to move light to moderately heavy materials approximately 25-35 lbs; prolonged sitting and computer use. ALL NEW HIRES ARE SUBJECT TO PASSING A DRUG SCREEN.
