The Creative Director will be the creative visionary and keeper for the overall image, look, aesthetics, styling and visual identity of the brand. Freelance Jr. Production Designer

New York Magazine - Weddings New York Magazine is currently seeking a Freelance Jr. Production Designer to assist in the design and production of the Weddings Spring 2012 issue.

The ideal candidate for this position should have 3+ years of experience in editorial design/production and familiarity working with this type of content. Very thorough knowledge of K4 Publishing System and CS5 is a must as well as excellence in handling complex page design and typography.

This position will work very closely with the Art Director, photo editors and editors under tight deadlines. Responsibilities include designing pages, attaching text to layouts, preparing files, creating mini boards of layouts/photos and submitting proofs to editors. This is a 2-month position starting around January 9.

JOB SUMMARY: We are actively recruiting for a wildly imaginative art director to join the collaborative team responsible for Fresh Home magazine. Under the direction of the editor in chief and the creative director, the art director will take the lead in developing the visual style of one of the most vibrant magazines on the newsstand. In fact, Folio magazine named us a top 15 launch of 2009. Plus, we're based in Milwaukee, an insanely cool city that you need to see to believe. From conception to completion, the art director ensures that every page reflects our mandate of "easy ideas for hands-on people." While we crave ingenuity, we need you to use your left brain as well: The art director is responsible to deliver all materials to prepress and, ultimately, the printer on time. Now for the details... ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Uses Macintosh-based software to design layouts for the magazine. Maintains current knowledge of new versions of software. Participates vigorously in overall planning of the magazine. In conjunction with editors, conceptualizes each issue, from planning the look to choosing fonts and colors for covers and inside pages. Proposes direction, gets approval for that direction, and ensures the design reflects that direction. Works with freelance photographers and inhouse photo studio to set up shoots for covers, features, food, product, and other needed materials. Directs the photo studio's work on cover and interior shoots to match the look and vision established at the editorial planning meetings. Works with the photo studio to select props for photos. Makes vendor recommendations for finding materials to complete special projects. Directs the selection of stock photos and visuals to embellish stories. Scans photos when necessary. Places house and outside advertisements to suit the established roadmap or as specified by the sales team. Ensures that ads augment, not detract from edit pages. Manages the workflow and traffic between departments for each project, communicating regularly with the editor, the photo studio and the prepress department and updating each accordingly. Provides training to new employees and interns as requested. Travels as necessary to direct location shoots. Performs other duties as assigned, such as helping other departments and creating illustrations, house ads, company graphics or other corporate projects.

Production Assistant/Show Coordinator

Your primary duties will be related to our juried competitions. You'll be responsible for logging in entries into our database using FilemakerPro, preparing pdfs for judging, communicating with entrants, gathering the hi-res files of the winners, sending out winner announcements requesting credits, sizing images and making tiffs of all winning entries. In addition you'll be proofreading text and other administrative duties as related to our shows. We have three shows with 3x3 and four shows with Creative Quarterly plus our twice-annual 3x3 Magazine, our quarterly magazine and annual 3x3 Directory. In addition you will be responsible for updating our database, updating our 3x3 web site with each new issue, photoshop work, answering the phones and supervising our weekly mailings of magazines and books. Hourly salary is commiserate with abilities plus we do have a transportation allowance. Hours are 10:15am to 6:15pm M-F. We're located in Brooklyn, 45 minutes from Union Square on the F/G Train. The studio is located one block from Prospect Park.
