Deputy Design Director

Chicago magazine has an exciting career opportunity for a creative and experienced deputy design director. You will collaborate with the design director on the monthly print magazine, designing features and departments, as well as designing the tablet edition and special inserts. The ideal candidate will have a strong editorial portfolio that demonstrates typography skills, excellent use and direction of photography and an inventive use of illustration. The deputy design director will work closely with the photo editor to commission photographs that enhance the magazine and will work tightly with various editors to ensure fresh and unique presentations of the content of the magazine. Responsibilities: • Design departments and features for the monthly magazine • Coach junior art department staff members • Work closely with editors to create and oversee the overall look of the magazine • Coordinate with production and editorial to make sure deadlines are met • Direct photoshoots • Commission illustrations • Under the direction of the design director, coordinate the recruitment and development of design/art interns as well as freelance designers • Work within budgets and ensure illustrators and photographers are paid in a timely manner • Step in to run the art department when the design director is away • Perform design work and projects for the brand's digital properties

Digital Production Artist

-Completes all digital artwork/layouts assigned by the SAD or Creative Director -Produces all artwork according to the art director's specifications; works with Creative Director and assigned art director to achieve desired results. Advises creative on best way to achieve approved concept via computer layout/illustration/pre-press technique. -Generates proofs for review by creative director, assigned art director, account service personnel, proofreader/copy-editor and client. -In conjunction with supervisor, orders all digital output when needed, and works with vendors to coordinate correct digital output and transmission of pre-press artwork prepared on computer; orders camera-ready materials, type output or other outside purchases not supplied by creative to complete assigned projects. -Confirms all production deadlines and printing specs with SAD, production manager and/or traffic manager. -Reviews all work for errors/omissions with art department supervisor prior to turning in work for creative/account executive/client approval. -Makes all requested changes/corrections promptly and correctly. -Maintains working knowledge of pertinent software and peripherals needed to complete work. -May be asked to assist in preparing digital images for use by the interactive design department on interactive websites. -Able to create mockups of layouts or boards for presentations -Needs to be able to do minor design revisions -Be familiar with versioning and have the ability to follow a matrix -Takes on additional responsibilities as determined by the Creative Director.
