Art Director

Cooking Light is recruiting a highly motivated Art Director with a passion for food photography and design to work in our Birmingham, Alabama office. Reporting to the Creative Director, the Art Director is responsible for art directing photography on location and in the new state-of-the art Time Inc. Food Studios. The Art Director will also commission and oversee illustration and package and design stories, while maintaining the overall design quality and integrity of our print and digital platforms-- from design to production.

TEMPORARY SENIOR DESIGNER

Cooking Light is seeking a temporary Senior Designer to fill in for our current Senior Designer who will be out on maternity leave (mid-July to mid-October). He or she will work on all sections of the magazine from the feature well to the department pages and will also be tasked with reviewing and approving color for main magazine and special editions. The Senior Designer will be expected to design pages in a fast-paced environment under firm deadlines. He/she will also art direct photo shoots on set and approve images for their assigned stories. He/she must work closely with the editors to create a layout that fulfills the editorial requirements, fits the look and feel of the magazine and fulfills the Creative Director¹s instructions. The Senior Designer must be meticulous with typography and creative with their layouts as well as fast enough to keep the magazine on schedule. An interest in and experience with food is a plus. Must have experience assigning illustrations as well as enjoying coming up with concepts to fit the stories. This person will be responsible for guiding assigned stories through the entire design/production process (visual concept, image choice, layout, print orders, color correction). The work schedule is generally 9:30-6. Proficiency in InDesign and editorial magazine experience is a must. Knowledge of Woodwing (or a similar system) is preferred. The position is located in Birmingham, AL but open to designers who are interested in temporarily relocating.

ART DEPARTMENT FELLOW

The editorial art department at Cooking Light--the country's largest epicurean magazine--seeks a passionate and energetic fellow to join our creative team in Birmingham, AL. The art department fellow will design various front-of-book stories and assist the art department while learning the ins-and-outs of working at a national magazine. Visual storytellers wanted--photography/video experience a plus. Responsibilities: • Route layouts through the production process--work with master pages, apply style sheets to text, and format layouts • Design various front of book sections • Design on-brand content for print and digital on the fly • Assist designers in pulling photography inspiration and creating art plans • Along with other fellows, assist with general office duties, including answering customer service emails, distributing mail, and organizing the library
