Photo Intern

The New York Observer is currently seeking a photo intern, available between 3 and 5 days a week for the Fall 2013 semester. This internship will be a great opportunity to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven newspaper environment. The intern will work closely with the Photo Editor, Creative Director and production department and job duties will include but are not limited to: location shoots (portrait experience a plus), photo research and acquisition, retouching, organization and preparation of photos for publication. The ideal candidate will have a background in photography, strong organizational skills, familiarity with Mac operating systems, Adobe Photoshop, Indesign, Microsoft Word. A great opportunity for a young photographer to get his/her work published and seen by a large readership. Credit is available. Art Director/Production Manager

Observer Media is looking for an experienced art director to manage the production of the company's celebrated media titles. This person would be responsible for leading art and production department in the creation of two weekly newspapers (The New York Observer and Commercial Observer), as well as monthly and quarterly magazines and supplements. He our she would manage staff designers and our photo editor, as well as numerous freelancers, taking the lead on assigning illustration, photography and designing editorial products. This position also requires one to be responsible for liaising with production facilities, managing internal production of print advertising and lending design expertise as well as work to launch web initiatives. We're looking for the right person with solid print experience as well as digital knowledge to bring our designs to new audiences--happy to tackle tablet, user experience and more dynamic designs as well.
