Senior Designer

Washingtonian magazine, located in Washington, DC, is currently seeking a motivated and talented Senior Designer to join its art team. The ideal candidate will have a chance to make an impact on our award-winning suite of publications: Washingtonian magazine, Washingtonian Bride & Groom, and Washingtonian Welcome Guide. Responsibilities include designing FOB and BOB departments, infographics, and occasional features, as well as managing our interns, in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. Candidates must have at least three years of magazine experience, a love of typography, and a keen eye for complex page design. Photo Director

Washingtonian Magazine is looking for an energetic, well-organized Photo Director with a passion for visual storytelling to join our team. The ideal candidate will work closely with the editorial, art, and digital teams to guide the selection and presence of strong visuals in the magazine and website, as well as enhance the monthly print magazine with multimedia presentations on the magazine's website and tablet editions. This full-time position entails overseeing daily photo research from a wide range of sources, supervising staff photographers, an assistant photo editor, and interns, and spotting and recruiting new freelance photographers for the magazine. This position also involves scheduling upcoming shoots, overseeing the departmental budget, and directing photo and video shoots. He/she will be prepared to bring unique story ideas to the table, as well as being able to execute the visions of the Creative Director. We're looking for someone who is inclined to ask the right questions at the right time--in short, a dedicated, collaborative team player.

An ideal candidate has a strong interest in editorial design and a love for the DC area. The candidate must be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). Duties will include assisting the art department with designing layouts for FOB and BOB sections, creating graphics for washingtonian.com, and attending art/photo meetings to discuss planning for each month's issue. Previous experience at a magazine and/or knowledge of K4 is a plus, but not required.

Deputy Art Director

Washingtonian Magazine, located in Washington, DC, is looking for a Deputy Art Director with 5-7 years experience in magazine publishing. This position reports to the Design Director and is responsible for designing a mix of features, service packages and department pages, working with editors and the photo department to conceive and direct artwork for a variety of stories. Collaborating with the Design Director in guiding designers in the creation of additional department and front of book pages, as well as playing a key role in a planned redesign. The ideal candidate has a well-developed design style, strong typographic skills and an all around passion for magazines. Skills include a thorough knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, and K4 with the ability to balance multiple projects and problem-solve under tight deadlines. Experience with digital mag creation for tablets a plus.
