Nomad Editions seeks an experienced candidate to freelance for various client projects in a web production capacity, reporting to the design director. Accuracy, efficiency, analytical skills and independent problem solving are vital to being successful in this position. Responsibilities: -Build, test, and deploy custom promotional magazines and email blasts that will display properly on all platforms (mobile, desktop etc.), using completed templates within our CMS. - Build custom web pages and micro-sites on occasion when the CMS alone won't solve the problem. - Deploy email blasts using MailChimp, optimizing for analytics -Work within our content management platform, Readz, which deploys HTML5, responsively-designed "magazines". Qualifications - BA or BS, ideally with emphasis in communications, marketing, advertising, computer science or related field - Proficient technical knowledge in: HTML (hand-coding); CSS (hand-coding); web content management systems - Minimum of 2 years experience in digital media or a combination of digital/traditional media. - A strong understanding of the editorial process. - Experience with video editing a plus; JavaScript, Photoshop, Acrobat, Doubleclick, GoogleAnalytics, Dreamweaver or your preferred HTML editor a must. - Team player that has excellent time management and communication skills. - Self-starter that can multitask, solve problems and take ownership of projects. - Work will be based in our offices in Midtown Manhattan, but may evolve as necessary to allow for significant telecommuting.

Assistant Photo Editor

DISCOVER magazine is looking for an Assistant Photo Editor. Ideal candidate will have 2-3 years experience working in the photo department at a consumer magazine. Position requires a BA in photography or a related field. We offer an excellent benefit package which includes health/dental/life insurances, and 401k/ Profit Sharing and pension plans. GENERAL SKILLS: The Assistant Photo Editor should be able to readily identify what makes a strong image. Must be a creative, innovative thinker with a unique viewpoint. Art Department Intern

Discover Magazine is currently seeking Art Department Interns. Candidate must be a senior level undergraduate student or a graduate student with strong print production skills enrolled in a fine arts or communications design program/institution. Excellent typography and conceptual imaging skills are bare necessities for this internship. Highly proficient InDesign users strongly preferred. Fast learners more comfortable with Quark will be considered (for the record, we use InDesign CS2 and we're migrating to CS5 in the coming weeks). For the best possible learning experience, we require maintaining at least 15 hours weekly within our offices in Manhattan. Working under the direction of the art director, this intern will conceptualize, sketch, comp, and produce editorial designs for a 1-million-plus circulation national science magazine focused on long-form narrative journalism. Additionally, the intern will work under direction from the photo editor to provide administrative and research support, learning effective techniques for finding and sourcing high-quality existing imagery. Finally, this internship will also include training in production workflow, software, and techniques to maintain page geometries, typographic standards, and shipping final files to press. Other duties will include taking a proactive role in maintaining the editorial wall, participating in art meetings, and creating the occasional support media for screen or print properties, or print campaigns. We're also in the midst of creating our first iPad version of the magazine, and if there is interest, the intern will participate in that, as well. Between cycles of the monthly issue, we also produce quarterly newsstand-only special issues which allow for more creative leverage, and which the intern and art director work on together very closely.
