Graphic/Data Visualization Designer

Position Summary: Design graphics and create illustrations for interactive experiences on the Brookings web site; create figures and graphics for use in presentations. Design and layout Brookings print publications, including reports, fact-sheets, and other printed items. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 50% Graphic Design • Create graphics to support Brookings publications on the web and in print. • Create comps, wireframes, and other materials necessary to guide the development of engaging Brookings content experiences. • Create miscellaneous graphics for the Brookings website, social media channels, interactive features, and other content. • Create concept illustrations that communicate Brookings research topics. • Create layouts for reports and essays. 40% Data Visualization and Graphic Content Creation • Draft and design visualization products incorporating feedback from clients. • Create compelling data visualizations and infographics in support of Brookings research. • Collaborate with staff to create infographics and other visualizations to be used strategically various social media platforms. • Perform quality assurance on final products in conjunction with Brookings researchers and communications professionals. 10% Print and Other Design • Work in close conjunction with Brookings researchers and communications professionals, design and layout Brookings print reports, incorporating text, figures and photographs. • Create graphics for use in Brookings Keynote and PowerPoint presentations. Education/Experience Requirements: Minimum bachelor's degree required, bachelor of fine art degree in graphic design preferred. Minimum three years of work experience designing for the web. Must present online portfolio of work that shows versatile design aesthetic and examples of innovative and thoughtful web and data visualization design. Knowledge/Skills Requirements: Thorough knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Familiar with industry best-practices related to print design and brand identity. Working knowledge of web development and technologies, as they relate to design. Proficiency with HTML, CSS and JavaScript preferred. Training provided to applicants that show a basic understanding and willingness to grow. Familiarity with optimizing graphics for online use required. Strategic understanding of social networks like Faceboook, Twitter and YouTube required. Excellent spoken, written, and visual communication skills. Exceptional creativity, enthusiasm, sense of humor, team spirit, commitment, and professionalism. Ability to meet tough deadlines and juggle multiple projects. Familiarity with compatibility and cross-platform issues related to the major browsers and operating systems.
