Freelance Art Director: Preservation

The National Trust for Historic, a nonprofit organization that works to save America's historic places, seeks an exceptionally talented and creative magazine designer for our quarterly magazine, Preservation, on a contract basis. We are currently soliciting competitive proposals for a fixed-price contract from firms or individuals that are qualified to art direct and design this award-winning publication. The art director will have proven experience in publication design, demonstrating sophisticated art direction, design, typography and photography. Responsibilities for this position include: conception, design and layout of 72-page issue's cover, features and department pages--on average 40 pages. Coordinates with the managing editor on the acquisition of photography and illustration. Ensures designs are forward looking, cutting edge and in line with the National Trust's brand. Supports a positive and effective team atmosphere, communicating clearly with National Trust staff. Follows assigned schedules. Works closely with creative director and editorial staff in communicating various design strategies, reporting directly to the Managing Editor on a day-to-day basis. Adheres to established style guidelines. Manages complete process from conception through hand-off of final press-ready files.

Art Director

The ideal candidate has proven experience in publication and content design, demonstrating the use of sophisticated art direction, design, typography, photography and illustration. You must be a multi-tasker who can easily design and layout a beautiful feature, department, and sidebar, but can also craft a digital piece with punch. We are looking for someone who can turn out pages quickly and has the ability to dissect stories and content across both print and digital using creative solutions in a collaborative environment. This is a key role for a design thinker with a passion for storytelling, usability and an eye for visual consistency.

Art Director

DUTIES: • Conceptualize, art direct and implement sophisticated design solutions across all channels including the pages of the quarterly Preservation magazine--features, departments, ad specials and its digital iterations, digital companion pieces, promotions, social media materials, multimedia and other digital content as needed. • Direct the complete process from conception through hand-off of final press-ready or digital files. • Art direct and hire the best photographers and illustrators. Must have exceptional design, layout, and typographic skills. Ensures design is sophisticated, forward looking, cutting edge and brand compliant. • Must have strong leadership and communication skills, be able to articulate design solutions and execute vision of senior editorial and creative staff. • Support a positive and effective team atmosphere. This is a highly collaborative position and you must be able to multitask and adhere to multiple deadlines. Must be detail-oriented--strong organizational and time management skills are mandatory. • Must have both magazine experience and proven experience taking content across digital environments using creative presentations to tell stories online.
