Photo Director

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is seeking a Photo Director to serve as a creative partner and collaborator for the Editors in Chief and Creative Directors of Martha Stewart Living's magazines and books, and ensure a consistent photographic identity for the brand. Responsibilities: • Oversee the production and scheduling of all photography for publishing, in collaboration with the art department, stylists, and story teams. • Manage the team of photo editors, producers, and in-house photographers. • Attend creative review meetings and ensure the photographic direction is being communicated clearly to photo editors and to photographers being assigned. • Ensure photo shots are being produced on budget, on time, and in a thorough and efficient manner. • Oversee the monthly photo shoot calendars and story budgets for the content group. • Produce shoots, from start to finish, along with the team; work directly with Martha Stewart to plan her shoots. • Attend concept meetings and contribute visual solutions to stories. Seek out and pitch new photographers. • Negotiate terms with photographers, illustrators, and agents; book photographers; and track final invoices against estimates. • Manage the invoicing processes and procedures, including approvals, coding, and resolving discrepancies between photographers, vendors and accounting. • Work with Studio Manager daily to allocate studio space in all in-house shoots. Research and book outside studio locations when necessary.

Senior Art Director, Books and Special Projects

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is currently seeking a Senior Art Director to join the Books and Special Projects Team. Under the guidance of the Design Director, the Senior Art Director will be tasked with coming up with creative design solutions and contributing typographic and design inspiration to books and special projects. We are looking for a creative individual who has experience with editorial design navigation and should have a sophisticated design sense, strong grasp of typography, great attention to detail, and possess the ability to shape a project from conception to completion. This individual should excel at working both independently as well as in a collaborative team environment

Design Production Associate, Martha Stewart Weddings

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is currently seeking a Design Production Associate to join the Weddings team for a short-term 6-week total freelance contract. Under the guidance of the Managing Editor and Design Director, and working along with the Art and Edit teams, the candidate will play an integral part in the workflow and production of the print and iPad versions of the magazine. Responsibilities: Working with art directors and editors to tighten layouts and type on both print and iPad editions for release of art and composed pages to outside vendors. Work with Design Production team to regulate procedural standards and quality measures. Convert print layouts to iPad format, with careful attention to style sheets. Setup an array of interactive elements to work on the iPad (including but not limited to links and multi-state objects). Test iPad interactive functionality and create folios for publishing, Requirements: 5+ years' production experience in a magazine environment. iPad production experience is required Expertise in InDesign CS5. Working knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator to correctly assemble electronic files and trouble shoot any problems so that they retain their integrity. Working knowledge of the K4 system is helpful. Must be skilled at tightening layouts, linking images, and creating articles. Should have and meticulous type skills: including kerning and ragging.

Freelance Art Director, Whole Living Magazine

Whole Living magazine is seeking a Freelance Art Director to work as a part of the team, to participate in the design evolution of FOB sections, and overall design of editorial pages. We are looking for a creative individual who has experience with editorial design navigation and should have a sophisticated design sense, strong grasp of typography, great attention to detail, and possess the ability to shape a project from conception to completion. This individual should excel at working both independently as well as in a collaborative team environment. We will also be creating an tandem iPad version of the issue during the same period and are looking for individuals who have had experience with tablet publishing, and how the printed page gets translated to a digital platform.

Digital Imaging Specialist

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is currently seeking a Digital Imaging Specialist for the Publishing Group to work on various titles as needed. The Specialist will be responsible for color correcting, retouching, manipulating, and trafficking images and other related assets. The Specialist must be able to translate mark-ups on proofs to actual retouching, and have the ability to turn work around quickly on tight deadlines. 

Requirements: Expertise in Photoshop CS4 and CS5, with a good working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Acrobat, and Bridge is required. Must be extremely proficient on a Macintosh Platform. Magazine and or publishing experience is preferred. Must have excellent communications skills, the ability to work as part of a team, and experience working with art directors and print production. An appreciation of the MSLO culture and an interest in the core content areas is preferred. A background in photography would be a plus. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including an occasional late night.

Martha Stewart Living Editorial Design Interns (Fall Semester)

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is currently looking for Fall Art Department Interns for both Martha Stewart Living and Whole Living Magazines. The ideal interns can commit to 20-30 hours per week from September through December in our West Chelsea office. Interns will be working directly with the art directors, production staffers, and editors and will be expected to help art directors with page layout for various parts of the book, update and manage the wall of current issue pages, do basic Photoshop photo manipulation, and create illustrations in Adobe Illustrator for various parts of the magazine. Please email your cover letter, resume, and at least 5 pdf samples of your design work (or a link to portfolio site). Experience in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop is a must.
