Dwell Media is seeking a photo editor who possesses the highest standards for magazine photography and demonstrates an unbridled enthusiasm for innovative storytelling solutions. The candidate must demonstrate creative vision and possess a high level of design sophistication. The candidate should have an interest in modern design and should understand how to allure and amuse the audience through effective use of photography. The photo editor pushes to keep Dwell in the forefront of an ever-changing marketplace. He or she will thrive in a multi-disciplined, collaborative team environment that balances hard work and drive with humor and fun.
Responsibilities
• Oversee the evolution of the imagery of the magazine. Conceptualize new ways in which photography in the magazine can work and reflect themes
• Manage all magazine assignment photography
• Art direct and concept photo shoots in collaboration with Art Director
• Photo Production: Manage and negotiate individual estimates and shoot production details, including styling, propping, etc.
• Gather existing art for some stories in collaboration with Assistant Photo Editor
• Edit images for stories and collaborate with design on layouts
• Manage art and negotiate contracts and rates for all special issues and extra projects such as Dwell on Design
• Create and oversee the photo budget. Keep track of estimates, gather necessary contracts and process invoices. Negotiate with vendors
• Create, oversee, and forecast yearly and re-forecast quarterly for the overall art budget
• Find photo essays and research new photo talent
• Handle website photo requests or projects and work on the various other photo needs for brand extension
• Manage photo usage rights issues. Manage signatures and organization of contracts. Help create new photographer and illustrator contracts with legal council
• Oversee asset management and tracking of shoots/film/product returns
• Review and approval of all photo credit information that appears in magazine
• Manage assistant photo editor and photo interns, overseeing their work and ensuring their growth
• Demonstrate high efficiency in meeting deadlines, and an ability to multitask.
• Create and manage all internal photography tracking systems, such as the photographers database and contracts database.
• Be a mentor to the photo team, assisting with negotiations, production questions, homeowner needs, reviewing existing art
• Initiate, collaborate, and contribute to all brand platforms as it relates to photography; fulfill all photo needs in working with the various brand teams, managing any rights issues relating to usage; and being a part of the "strategy" team on all brand platforms.
