Creative Director

Washingtonian is seeking an imaginative, collaborative, and relentlessly ambitious leader for its creative department. For 50 years, the award-winning city magazine for the Washington area has been a home for groundbreaking feature writing, essential service journalism, and arresting visual storytelling. We're looking for someone who can help us take the magazine to the next level, leading a high-caliber team of designers, photo editors, and staff photographers and overseeing all aspects of the brand's visual presence. Official responsibilities include: brainstorming and designing covers, service packages and features, directing staff and freelance contributors, and managing workflow; working with editors on visually-driven story ideas; managing a budget; and working with the publisher to plan and assign ancillary publications. Unofficial responsibilities include: helping create a freewheeling creative environment where staffers are encouraged to cook up ambitious ideas big and small; inspiring a talented team of designers who want to step up their game and editorial folks who want to better collaborate; setting and maintaing high visual standards; and having a lot of fun while doing so. In addition to first-class design skills, our ideal art director would posses a large rolodex of artists and photographers who can help make our pages even more exciting. Must have a minimum of 7 years of magazine experience, a love of typography, a keen eye for complex page design and be a true team player. ART DIRECTOR

ART DIRECTOR

Washingtonian Magazine has an outstanding career opportunity for an experienced Art Director to join our design team in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will have strong editorial design experience along with the ability to produce high-energy, high-impact work for our award-winning suite of publications: Washingtonian Magazine, Washingtonian Bride & Groom, Washingtonian MOM, and Washingtonian Welcome Guide. This position reports to the Creative Director and is responsible for designing a mix of features, service packages, department pages while delegating to/managing an art team. Working closely with editors to create and oversee the overall look of what is produced while coordinate with production to make sure deadlines are met. An all around passion for magazines is a MUST. Skills include a thorough knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, and K4 with the ability to balance multiple projects in highly collaborative environment while problem-solve under tight deadlines. Experience with digital mag creation for tablets a plus.

Assistant Photo Editor

Washingtonian magazine, located in Washington, DC, is currently seeking a motivated and talented Assistant Photo Editor to join its art team. The ideal candidate will have the chance to make an impact on our award-winning suite of publications: Washingtonian magazine, Washingtonian Bride & Groom, Washingtonian Mom and Washingtonian Welcome Guide. Responsibilities include assigning shoots, researching stock photos, submitting imagery for color, inputing page credits, and other administrative duties. Candidates must have at 2-5 years of publishing experience and a love of photography. This position requires a keen eye for detail and strong multitasking and organizational skills.

Art Director

The ideal candidate will be a hands on creative team player, who will be spearheading our ever expanding custom media division. Alongside this he/she will have a chance to make an impact on our award-winning suite of publications: Washingtonian magazine, Washingtonian Bride & Groom, Washingtonian Mom and Washingtonian Welcome Guide. Candidates must have at least five to seven years of magazine experience, a love of typography, and a keen eye for complex page design. Proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop required; experience with digital publishing and web a plus.

Design Intern

Washingtonian magazine, located in Washington, DC, is currently seeking a motivated and talented Design Intern to assist its art team. The ideal candidate will have a chance to make an impact on our award-winning suite of publications: Washingtonian magazine, Washingtonian Bride & Groom, Washingtonian Mom and Washingtonian Welcome Guide. Responsibilities include helping with the design of FOB and BOB departments, infographics, and occasional features, in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. The candidate should possess a love of typography, and a keen eye for design. Previous experience at a magazine and/or knowledge of K4 is a plus, but not required. Proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop required.
