Holiday Party Treats!

Holiday Party Treats!

We've had so many requests at SPD HQ about the delicious treats served at the close of the Holiday Bash on Wednesday, we wanted to share the info with all of you, so you can plot a pick-up of your own. So here's all you need to know about Bomboloni, those delicious treats:
In keeping with Italian design and consummate taste, Bomboloni's lusciously decadent bombolonis (Italian for donut - but nothing at all like Dunkin's) are available in an assortment of incredible gourmet flavors - from Meyer lemon and blood orange to toasted chocolate marshmallow and even chestnut. The flavor options are always on trend with the seasons and customer's latest requests. A box of 6 is available for a mere $7.00; a total must bring as we ramp up those holiday parties. Bomboloni has its home right at 187 Columbus Avenue.
Just in time for everyone on your NICE list!

AIGA/NY + Karel Martens: A Don't Miss Event

Wednesday, September 7th, AIGA/NY will be hosting a special evening with Karel Martens, the cofounder of Werkplaats Typografie and prolific designer; this is a rare appearance in New York, and a stellar shot of excitement to get you out of any back-from-Labor-Day-holiday slump. From AIGA/NY's site announcing the event:
Martens has been practicing for fifty years and continues to create forward-looking and technologically ground-breaking work that is comfortable in the current moment but not consumed by it. He is a highly influential book designer but considers himself more broadly a "designer of the printed word." But he's really a designer of language, even abstract and photographic language. His work extends with equal innovation and clarity of communication across almost all imaginable media, from coins and postage stamps to monoprints to ASCII art to experimental video to electric signs to textiles to building facades.

A few fun things going on in art if you're in the city that cloudy and gray June forgot, and has finally got it's summer on...a quick post for hump day:

WED 07.15
A design talk at the magnificent High Line
If you haven't had the pleasure of strolling it yet...I suggest a weekday or morning coffee as you might get mowed down by strollers on the weekends and the hipster bomb in the evenings...)
A lecture with members of the High Line's design team, James Corner (James Corner Field Operations) and Ric Scofidio and Liz Diller (Diller Scofidio + Renfro)

Bowling Finale

Bowling Finale

Hi all, (I know everyone is sad about this ha ha) but this is my last post of the season...barring any fantastic photos or banquet mayhem that might occur after tonight, on this, the final game of NYAMBL. A long strange season its been, with more magazines closing their doors mid-league I expect everyone to come out in flying colors, expertly designed shirts, throw down those custom balls and support the Media Muscle©. Heck one of 'em might be your boss someday. MORE
Leisure Time

Leisure Time

Hi all, sorry your roving bowling reporter has been MIA for a while, I had, um... a layoff and a few American cities to wander, but I'm back and so is NYAMBL tonight, for the FINAL WEEKS!

The last few post-game gatherings have taken place across the street at that dive I think they call Stitch, where you can see waitresses in leopard bikinis / holsters, and see (hopefully from afar) some of the more 'colorful' characters you thought Disney cleaned out of Port Authority long ago. Once I saw the punching bag showdown from the kids at Comedy Central and Flavorpill that had me giggling into the wee hours. If I get my SPD entries done Ill run down and take pics! (or you can upload them to the FB page)

Schedule and a few cool designed vintage hints after the jump. (I found this in my mother's bowling bag...I think it was cheaper back then to take your kids to the lanes instead of day care;) /// HJ

Bowling Makes A Bad Day A Whole Lot Better

Bowling Makes A Bad Day A Whole Lot Better

For want of nothing too saccharine post on this, a day when I really, literally, shouldn't have come to work, suffice it to say bowling will be the best part of my day. (I will try to remain unbiased but I might have to hang out the first game with... The Frisky vs. Modern Luxury? You can't make this stuff up.) Good luck teams! (ps. if you see me not hydrating correctly please remind me my exit interview is first thing in the am, neat.) /// H

The second round is upon us. Some of us had a rough beginning last week, our creaky joints and saddled behinds have been hibernation mode all winter. So in the light that we're all a little rusty (Tara) and everyone could use a little practice (Joel) below is a list of lanes around the city if you want to gear up off hours to prep for the big game. And not only is the more the merrier in this game...its way cheaper.

Though I got my highest score at Bowlmor (still researching the scientific evidence that dayglo improves your focus) my favorite is my pal's joint in Williamsburg: the vintage-designed Gutter, but go early because the kids stay late and drink long. Good luck!  /// H-Bomb

One Foot in the Gutter...

One Foot in the Gutter...

...and the other on the lanes! Winter is retreating, daffodils are peeking up and fashion week is finally almost over. The time has come to be leave our computer stations, office Nerf wars and gray cubicled confines and take our business to a new arena: to the former commuter purgatory, to the home of Invisible Jesus, to the Newly Renovated Port Authority©.

Tonight is the official opening of the New York All-Media Bowling League's 4th season. While last year, yours truly (H-Bomb) and the Best Life team had the honour and privilege to be sponsored by Altoids, (and the pride / horror of wearing "Curiously Strong" on your back sides was fodder for many jokes to come) this year is understandably a little leaner...I think the grand prize is a handle of Jack Daniels. But no worries! There will be spirited competition, laneside massages, expert bowling shirt design, BenGay distribution, and morning youtubing forever ingrained on the interwebs.

Stay tuned and see how your colleagues show the old salty dogs at Port Authority what happens when 3 ft. beer towers meet the Muscle of the Media.

Schedule and a few images from last year after the jump.

Bring your nacho money.
