Food For Thought

Our Food for Thought  Speaker Series event on December 10th, held at the Helen Mills Theatre, was a great success. Our panel consisted of a top food magazine editor, creative directors, and photographer. The evening was full of great presentations by our panelists and a very lively debate about the current state, and future, of magazine brands in a multiplatform world. A special thanks to event photographer Matt Monath, and to Speaker Committee members Joe Zeff and Peter Hemmel for their tireless work on this event!

A Night Under the Influence...

A Night Under the Influence...

... of illustration is a great way to spend a night. Huge thanks to the illustrators who shared their experiences and advice, covering everything from finding, accepting, and turning down work to rights and copyright issues, good and bad art directors, editors, dream jobs, nightmare clients, and everything in between: Peter Arkle, Juliette Borda, Tim O'Brien, Christopher Silas Neal, Katherine Streeter and Jillian Tamaki. An extra-special thanks to Ted McGrath and Yuko Shimizu (in person!) for signing copies of their posters for the give-away, and to  Mark Heflin of American Illustration (don't forget! Thursday morning, March 5th, is the FINAL DEADLINE for AI 28) for moderating this discussion so well we actually got booted from the amphitheatre for staying so long!

DWI: Under the Influence with Today's Most Arresting Illustrators

Some fun additions to our upcoming DWI: Do It With Illustration night next Tuesday: since we're showing the AI25 Anniversary Timeline movie at 6:45PM, Yuko Shimizu will be signing 25 of her AI25 posters, while they last, starting at 6:30PM when the doors open.

We'll also have 50 signed AI27 posters by the artist Ted McGrath to give away, again, while they last -- obviously, the early arrivals get the bounty.

You'll also be able to order copies of the latest volumes from American Illustration (AI 27, designed by Open NY) and American Photography (AP 24, designed by Scott Dadich).

All info about the night, including how to RSVP early & save $5 off the price of your tickets, here.

Above, samples of Yuko Shimizu's AI25 poster (top), and Ted McGrath's AI27 poster (bottom). Get there early!

NOW & THEN: Paula Scher for SPD@FIT

For our inaugural SPD@FIT event for 2009, we knew we needed something big enough to keep pace with the other big inaugural events of 2009. Join us on Tuesday, February 10th for an evening with Paula Scher, Partner at Pentagram, for an evening Paula describes in this way:

As a child of the sixties I was always rebellious. It came with the decade. I found that a form of rebelliousness is always present in my best work, and my work suffers when it is widely accepted and it becomes a part of the establishment.
This talk will show how I have rebelled against Helvetica, expectations of others, and mostly rebelled against myself.
