Portfolio Review Wrap-Up

Portfolio Review Wrap-Up Wednesday night we were lucky to be hosted by the fine folks at Wix.com for our annual Portfolio Review event. Thanks to our 6 terrific reviewers, attendees got in-depth reviews as well as a few quick ones which gave them a variety of opinions and advice to help perfect their portfolios. We also got a sneak peek at the awesome super-easy-to-use tools Wix.com has to offer for building your own online portfolio. Check out photos and some take-away tips after the jump...

A few takeaways for those not able to attend:

- iPads are definitely becoming the go-to choice for portfolios, but many reviewers still love to see magazine work in full-size hard copies.

- You MUST have an online portfolio in addition to your official portfolio. That is how you will nab an interview. Without the online portfolio, you'll likely never get a chance to show your official portfolio. Check out the easy-to-use templates and website builder Wix has to offer here. (We've used them, they're awesome!)

- It's awesome if you have illustration or photography skills and can work them into your design pieces as opposed to showing them as separate works.

- Beware of large, oversize books. If your portfolio is awkward to look at cause the pages are super-huge or the binding is too tight, that's going to detract from your actual design work.

- Be able to chat and talk about your work in a more casual, chatty way. The best interviews and portfolio reviews are fun, two-way conversations.

- If the grammar and spelling in your pieces is bad, that definitely detracts from your design work no matter how good the design is.

- Make sure all the images used in your pieces are high-resolution. Like bad grammar, lo-res images detract from your work and send the message that you don't care about details. And if you don't care about details in your portfolio, how can we trust you to care about details in the job we give you?

Thanks again to Wix for hosting us in their Wix Lounge ... it's a FREE co-working space where you can use their office space and wi-fi during workday hours for FREE!

And a HUGE thanks to our reviewers: Eve Binder, Heather Haggerty, Angela Riechers, Mike Schnaidt, Peter Sucheski and Todd Weinbgerger.
