#TBT: SPD-U Throws it Back to 2012 Student Competition Winner Geraldson Chua 50th-Small.jpgAs part of SPD's 50th Anniversary celebration, we're looking back at our past Student Competition winners (see galleries of past winning work here on the blog). A few of them were kind enough to speak with us about what they've been up to since their wins and how the competition affected them. As you can see, they're all quite successful and most are working in magazines. Want to follow their path? Enter THIS year's competition.

In 2012 as part of our 12th Student CompetitionGeraldson Chua won an Honorable Mention for his work as a student at Rutgers University.

From there, he interned at Harpers Bazaar and Seventeen, then eventually left school to work at Esquire before landing at O, The Oprah Magazine where he now serves as Senior Designer. We caught up with him for a few quick words...

SPD-U: What do you consider the greatest achievements thus far in your career?

GERALDSON: Just being able to do what I do is an achievement in itself. It's tough getting into this business! I'm very fortunate to have worked and be working at such wonderful titles.

SPD-U: What advice would you give someone trying to get into the industry now?

GERALDSON: The best advice I can give to someone trying to get into the industry is to acknowledge & understand your strengths and capitalize on that. This allows you to build an identity which separates you from your peers.
