We continue to announce and showcase our top 6 winners in our 2015 Student Design Competition (our 17th!!). Today we're featuring our 2nd-place winner -- and recipient of the B.W. Honeycutt Award -- Jordane Roberts. Her prizes include $1,000, inclusion in our Pub 50 SPD Annual, invitation to our SPD Awards Gala and a summer design internship here in NYC! SPD-U: What was your inspiration in creating your entry?
JORDANE: I have always been a huge fan of Marilyn Manson both as an artist and as a 'character'. I wanted to create a design which represented his disjointed, distorted and 'mash-up' of a personality. I did some pretty thorough research into what inspires Manson and found his biggest inspirations to be Dadaism and Victorian London, so it made perfect sense to create a Dadaist collage graphic which stood against sophisticated, elegant typography.

SPD-U: What was the biggest challenge in creating your entry?
JORDANE: My biggest challenge was creating the graphic images. Not technically, as once I had the basic idea it didn't take me too long, but doing something which wasn't just type on a page was very out of my comfort zone! I started by buying old horror books and cutting peoples faces up.

SPD-U: Anything you learned or advice to share for students entering future SPD Student Competitions?
JORDANE: I learned to have fun with my work. After 3 years of being told to just let go a little bit I finally realise why my tutors were saying it so much. It turns out if you just have fun and enjoy what you're doing, maybe push yourself out of your comfort zone a little bit, you will end up doing something you are really happy with.

SPD-U: What's your major/field of study? And do/did you participate in any publication- or design-related campus activities throughout your college years?
JORDANE: I am in my final year of Design for Publishing at NUA so the majority of the course is publication based. However I've also recently been working on a live brief with a client who approached the university to create their new magazine.

*Who's this B.W. Honeycutt?
The second-place prize is our B.W. Honeycutt Award, given to honor the life and work of Bruce W. Honeycutt who died on January 12, 1994 at the age of 40. As the former Art Director of Details magazine, his redesign helped it earn accolades such as "Magazine of the Year" from Advertising Age and "Top Hottest 
Magazine" from Adweek. Honeycutt's work has been recognized by SPD, AIGA, and the Art Directors Club of New York amongst others. He taught publication design at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and attended North Carolina University at Chapel Hill.
