Bloomberg Businessweek: Process

Bloomberg Businessweek: Process

An evening with CD Richard Turley and the visual team of Bloomberg Businessweek.

On Thursday, April 21st, please join us at the offices of Bloomberg Businessweek where Creative Director Richard Turley, Design Director Cindy Hoffman, Director of Photography David Carthas, Information Graphics Director Jennifer Daniels and the creative team behind the Bloomberg relaunch of Businessweek will take us behind-the-scenes for a look at work that is smart and serious, from a team that knows how magazines are made.

As our very own Bob Newman wrote in GRIDS back in November:
When Bloomberg Businessweek launched their redesign (and re-imagination) of the magazine at the end of April, the response from the publication design community was somewhat underwhelming. The first couple covers were solid but not remarkable, the insides were crisply formatted but a bit overstuffed, and the imagery had yet to find its full voice.

It's time to take another look. In the succeeding months, the new design has grown and matured into a remarkable visual package. Week after week, creative director Richard Turley and his crew are producing stunning covers and features, along with tightly formatted interior pages that rival New York for their texture, density, creativity, and attention to detail. This is state-of-the-art magazine design, with highly-original and intelligent photos, graphics, and illustrations. It's a look that fuses the formatting brilliance of New York and the smart visual approach of The New York Times Magazine, with a hierarchy and architecture lifted from the best British and European publications (the Guardian chief among them). Most impressively, Businessweek has a high level of visual intelligence, challenging its readers, pushing the boundaries of traditional newsweekly and business magazine design. ...

Lynsey Addario's Photo Blog from Libya: "It's What I Do"

On March 16th, photographer Lynsey Addario and three other journalists on assignment in Libya for The New York Times were captured and held captive for five days. Over on the Times' Lens photo blog she has an extensive gallery of photos from her work during this period and some thoughts (different than the personal account reported earlier) about what it means for photographers, women especially, to continue working in war zones:
I will cover another war. I'm sure I will. It's what I do. It's important to show people what's happening. We have a unique access to what unfolds on the ground that helps our policymakers decide how to treat certain issues.
More on the Lens blog here.

>> A Beast, Daily: According to a recent study of iPad users, Apple and Rupert Murdoch's The Daily's "content is lacking, [and] superior content is available elsewhere online for free." In addition, there appears to be some general confusion as to what the pay and/or download model actually is.

>> Make Your Own App ... Free! For a limited time, iBuildApp, is ready to bring digital magazine publishing to the masses--and without charge. According to Folio, "users who want to create a digital magazine for the iPad can do so without the help of an IT team." The web-based creation tool allows users to upload images, video and content and choose a template. The magazine is then ready to be published.

>> Jihad Quarterly: al-Malahim Media, the media wing of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, recently launched Inspire, a magazine "aimed at readers living in Western countries -- who, if seduced by the argument, will be capable of putting together sophisticated [terror] plots."

Up next in the Roger Black enterprise: Treesaver, a browser-based digital publishing system for multiple screen sizes. A very interesting endeavor considering all the new platforms we need to deliver content to.

So, what about that old iPad? Out promoting this new venture, Roger tells New York Observer blog Beta Beat: that "I got one the first week, but I don't use it much anymore."

He went on to say:
"I am flabbergasted by how many people went out and bought an iPad," he added, "and even more so how the publishing industry thought it was some kind of magic pony that would save them."

>> New Stuff for Dennis: Felix Dennis, the founder of Maxim, Stuff, and The Week, recently purchased Mental Floss, the irreverent magazine and media company that brought us swimsuit photos of Albert Einstein and Eleanor Roosevelt. It will run separately from Dennis Publishing and will keep its offices (and retail store!) in Chesterland, Ohio. Its 12 employees will remain on the payroll, but its HQ will move to Manhattan.

>> Good. News. According to Good co-founder and creative director Casey Caplowethings at the magazine are looking up. Money is coming in, but not from venture capitalists. Good is opening an advertising wing to complement its editorial operation. "We view our business in two pieces: all the media stuff, and now our new unit 'Good to Business," where the indie publisher will look to help companies brainstorm more socially-conscious campaigns.

Here's a sneak peek of the upcoming The New York Times Magazine redesign which debuts this weekend. DD Arem Duplessis says that the redesign team looked back to move forward. Duplessis shares a little background on the project:

When Hugo Lindgren was announced as the editor of the magazine we knew he'd want change. This excited me because I felt like the design had moved too far away from the brand of the newspaper and this was the chance to get it right. Gail Bichler (Art Director of the magazine) and I divided the duties, she stayed on the weekly and lead the ship while I went upstairs to work on the redesign with Matt Willey, Caleb Bennett and Sara Cwynar. We used the newspaper and vintage magazine issues from the 50's, 60's and 70's as inspiration.
