SPD 47: Magazine of the Year - 15th Anniversary (Part 2)

In 1997, SPD debuted the Magazine of the Yearaward at its Pub33 Gala. The idea, conceived by co-chairs Janet Froelich and Robert Newman, was to create a best-of award voted on by all the judges who participated in the awards. It was a recognition of the best magazine of the year, the one with the best all-around design, imagery, graphics, illustration, and general visual magic. MORE

SPD 47: Magazine of the Year - 15th Anniversary

In 1997, SPD debuted the Magazine of the Year award at its Pub33 Gala. The idea, conceived by co-chairs Janet Froelich and Robert Newman, was to create a best-of award voted on by all the judges who participated in the awards. It was a recognition of the best magazine of the year, the one with the best all-around design, imagery, graphics, illustration, and general visual magic. The first winner was 2wice, art directed by Abbott Miller. Since then the list of winning magazines and art directors reads like a who's who of publication design: The New York Times Magazine, Details, GQ, Martha Stewart Kids, New York, Wired (add more names, my memory is slipping), and art directors Janet Froelich, Fred Woodward, Patrick Mitchell, Debra Bishop, Luke Hayman, Rockwell Harwood, John Korpics, and Scott Dadich. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Magazine of the Year, and it remains the ultimate SPD award, the acknowledgement by the visual community of the very best in publication design.

This year marks the 15th Anniversary and the return of Robert Newman as chair for The Society's highest honor. Here, Part 1 of our retrospective, as we look back at the first five winners of Magazine of the Year.

Save The Date!

Save The Date!

The SPD 47 awards gala is nearly here.

All SPD members will be receiving their invitations through the post soon. Be sure to book your seats and tables quickly as space is limited.

This year the invite doubles as a handy guide to award ceremonies in the form of an oversized and frankly unwieldy poster which seemed like a GREAT idea in March. Then in April when we took delivery of them from the printer and the boxes took up the entire SPD office ... and then we realized we needed to order bigger envelopes... and then post them ... and then also pay for the extra postage. So maybe a less good idea in April. But anyway, in March, GREAT IDEA. And we did it because we wanted to give everyone something special, a thank you for supporting SPD, and a reason to get as excited about the gala as we are.

So look out for that in the mail and BOOK YOUR TICKETS NOW.

NOW.

No seriously. NOW.

Hillman Curtis, 1961-2012

The design community has suffered another tragic loss with the passing of Hillman Curtis, who died yesterday after what an announcement on his website called "a long and fiercely-fought battle with colon cancer."

This sad news comes on the heels of the untimely passing of noted magazine designers Amid Capeci and Joe Kimberling, who both lost their own battles with cancer earlier this year.

As a filmmaker Curtis first gained notoriety with his online "Artist Series" -- short documentaries on designers/artists including Milton GlaserPaula ScherDavid CarsonStefan SagmeisterJames VictorePentagram Design Group, and the filmmaker Mark Romanek. He also has made several short dramatic films and has filmed national commercials for IBM and Blackberry, as well as commercial web content for Sprint, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, SVA, Rolling Stone and many others.

Newman Named to Folio 40

Bob Newman, CD at Reader's Digest, has been named to the 2012 FOLIO: 40, the publication's annual list of the industry's most innovative and distinguished professionals. The list represents every facet of magazine publishing, from every corner of the industry. Not reserved exclusively for seasoned executives, "The 40" honors individuals from the corner office to the corner cubicle, where new ideas drive meaningful change.

Newman was brought on board with the formidable task of shattering RD's stereotypical 'grandmother's magazine' image to recast it as a magazine for the 21st century. His design work for the Reader's Digest tablet magazine has helped it approach 100,000 subscriptions, and has influenced the print edition as well.

Congratulations, Bob!
