Rodale to Resurrect Best Life

Rodale to Resurrect Best Life

Brandon Kavulla, you can come home now.

Health and fitness publisher Rodale is bringing back Best Life, the high-end men's lifestyle magazine that it folded in 2009, Adweek has learned.

With well-rounded editorial and big-name contributors like David Mamet and Jay McInerney, Best Life was popular with readers and advertisers, carrying brands like brands like Lexus, Charles Schwab and Yves Saint Laurent. However, it became a victim of its newness (it had only launched five years before) and the luxury ad market, which took a dive in the recession.

Digital Buzz Replacing Newsstand Buzz?

Digital Buzz Replacing Newsstand Buzz?

May 21, 2012 may not go down in cover history the same way as the week Time and Newsweek both featured a young Bruce Springsteen on their covers -- but it could be noted both pubs continued a recent trend of buzzworthy covers.

In this wired world, the pressure for a cover to "pop" has become more important in the digital space rather than the traditional, physical newsstand. Time, Newsweek and Bloomberg Businessweek have all been seeing success with this formula.

The New York Times reported about the trend over the weekend. Of the Time breast-feeding cover, they said:

"We had a cover that captured lightning in a bottle," said Richard Stengel, managing editor of Time. "It's obviously a story that hit a nerve."

A Time spokeswoman said the breast-feeding cover was its best-selling issue this year, and Time doubled the number of subscriptions typically ordered in a week.

Taking their cues from digital counterparts, magazines are as interested in hitting nerves on social media as on the newsstand. The Time cover left an even more impressive mark online. On the day after the cover appeared, terms related to the cover were four out of the top five searches on Google. In the eight days after its publication, the cover was mentioned over 50,000 times on Twitter, and the magazine's Twitter followers spiked. Time also received 43,000 likes on Facebook.

LA Times Magazine Shutting Down

LA Times Magazine Shutting Down

Nearly three years after the LA Times Magazine was removed from control of the business end of the paper and put back under the Los Angeles Times' editorial umbrella, the monthly pub is being shut down. FishbowlLA spoke with the mag's editor, Nancie Clare, who told us that the upcoming June issue will be the magazine's last.

"I think it's fair to say there were revenue issues," she tells us. "It's still a tough economic climate, especially for print. I don't think they got rid of us because they don't like us."

The mag's staff of seven will be let go. There's no indication if positions will be available for them in other sections of the paper.

Maurice Sendak Remembered

Maurice Sendak Remembered

When Don Morris Design was producing issues of Nick Jr. Magazine, Editor in Chief Freddi Greenberg hired author Else Holmelund Minarik to create a story called "Little Bear's New Friend," the first new addition to the beloved Little Bear children's book series in over 30 years. Freddi really wanted Maurice Sendak to illustrate the story, reuniting the author and illustrator that created Little Bear. And she decided I was the best person to approach Maurice, who was noted for not doing commissions and not working in magazines. … MORE

SPD 47: Members' Choice Entries

SPD 47: Members' Choice Entries

Attention all members of SPD! As we get ready for the Gala on Friday, with a review of some of the Magazine of the Year finalists, and more to come throughout the week, we have one final challenge for you: time to select your top choice for the only Gold Medal selected by all the members of the Society -- SPD Members' Choice.

Entries are shown after the jump; you may click on each image to see a larger version of the entry on its own. Each member magazine is allowed to enter just one "best choice" from their year, in any format they choose. You will find visual solutions presented as covers, as single pages or spreads, as entire issues (as represented by a sample cover and inside pages), and your challenge is to apply your professional judgment and experience to choose the best solution. It may be design, photo, illustration or infographic; it may be a cover that stuns you or a collection of work from an issue that overwhelms you.

We encourage you to take some time before you vote; there's a reason we're putting this preview live this afternoon but not sending our members the voting link until tomorrow morning: we want you to have some time to look through all these entries and weigh your decision carefully.

VOTING WILL CLOSE AT NOON on Thursday, May 10th.

The Members' Choice winner will be announced at the Gala on Friday, May 11th. Finalists after the jump...

SPD 47: Magazine of the Year - 15th Anniversary (Part 3)

In 1997, SPD debuted the Magazine of the Year award at its Pub33 Gala. The idea, conceived by co-chairs Janet Froelich and Robert Newman, was to create a best-of award voted on by all the judges who participated in the awards. It was a recognition of the best magazine of the year, the one with the best all-around design, imagery, graphics, illustration, and general visual magic. A look at the most recent winners...MORE
