Smart Money Ends Print Run

Smart Money Ends Print Run

Dow Jones & Co. said Thursday it will stop publishing the print version of SmartMoney, although it will expand the personal-finance magazine's digital platform.

Dow Jones, a unit of News Corp., which also publishes The Wall Street Journal, said it would add six new positions to SmartMoney.com's editorial staff but eliminate 25 jobs related to the print edition production. The last issue of the monthly magazine will be September's.

"It's clear that the volatility of markets and asset classes has increased the need for rapid delivery of personal finance intelligence, so we will be expanding our team and presence on the Web," said Robert Thomson, editor in chief of Dow Jones and managing editor of The Wall Street Journal.

A Night at the Gala

The highlight of the SPD year is our annual black-tie awards Gala, held this year at Cipriani's. All of the competition's winners were shown and the Magazine of the Year, Gold, and Silver medals were awarded. We had a blast eating, drinking, meeting old friends, and making new ones. Check out some photos from this year's Gala--and make sure to buy a ticket for next year's festivities!

Luke Hayman Redesigns T+L. Again.

Via Pentagram:

Pentagram's Luke Hayman and team have redesigned Travel+Leisure with a dynamic new format that matches the magazine's chic, sophisticated tone. The redesign launches with the June issue, on newsstands now.

Hayman worked closely with EIC Nancy Novogrod and DD Sandra Garcia on the project. Hayman was CD at T+L from 2002 to 2004, prior to joining Pentagram, and was familiar with the strengths and challenges of the magazine's existing design.

5 Questions with Vanessa Wyse of Toronto's 'The Grid'

5 Questions with Vanessa Wyse of Toronto's 'The Grid'

The Grid is a "city" weekly--not to be confused with an "alternative" weekly--published by the Toronto Star. Dubbed "Toronto at street level" (thus, "The Grid"--see what they did there?) the newsprint publication is distributed on the streets and for free.

"We wanted to turn the idea of a free urban weekly on its head and create a new kind of product. A kind of a hybrid. Something that looked and read like a magazine but physically was more akin to a newspaper. A mag that has relevant content, clean and contemporary design and highly-produced original photography. Something that readers would be a little bit reluctant to throw away at the end of the week," says The Grid's CD, Vanessa Wyse. "We wanted to reflect the true feeling of Toronto. There is a very raw approach to the photography and the tone of the magazine. It can be very tempting to look at great city mags like New York and take our cues from there, since they do it so well. But I think we have been successful in creating a magazine that is completely different."

Apparently, a few people agree. The Grid just celebrated its first anniversary by cleaning up in the design categories at Les Prix du Magazine Canadien (The Canadian National Magazine Awards), winning 4 golds and 2 silvers. Let's see how they did it ...

The Magazine that Became a Restaurant

The Oxford American, the 2-time ASME award-winning magazine of Southern culture, would like to know if you want fries with that.

The magazine recently announced that it had been awarded a substantial grant from ArtPlace to create a space that would celebrate Southern culinary culture, as well as featuring nightly cultural programming and becoming an anchor tentant in Little Rock, Arkansas's burgeoning SOMA arts district.

NYT Magazine Redesigns Four Times in One Day. Sort of.

NYT Magazine Redesigns Four Times in One Day. Sort of.

From the Unbeige blog:

The New York Times Magazine's annual innovations issue arrives this Sunday, stuffed with big ideas ranging from planet-saving bugs to futuristic family reunions. The magazine's crack design team took the theme to heart with an innovation of its own: an ambitious split run of four covers, each featuring a (gasp!) reimagined version of the Gray Lady's famed blackletter logo. Design director Arem Duplessis graciously provided us with an advance look at the bold cover quartet, pictured here. Working with art director Gail Bichler and designer Sara Cwynar, Duplessis tapped a selection of design firms and individuals to overhaul The New York Times Magazine logo and matched them with Chris Nosenzo's illustrations of four of the 32 "innovations that will change your tomorrow" featured in the issue. The "smart teeth" cover has a rinse-and-spit spirit, with a blurred-ink logo by Christopher Clark, while "power shirt" is partnered with the jaunty geometry of Non-Format. For "Cuddlebot," Nosenzo's robo-cat plays nice with Magpie Studio's fractal-shrouded caps, and "perilous play" finds its match in a playfully pixellated logo by Alex Trochut. Read on for our Q&A with Duplessis about this innovative cover project.
