People Magazine covers Newtown

People Magazine covers Newtown

People Magazine's Design Director Andrea Dunham on their extraordinary year end cover.

Dunham: This is the last cover of the year. It was supposed to be our annual year end issue called "The Best and Worst of 2012": a big fun entire issue dedicated to mirth and escape. But last Friday there was no escaping the brutal horror and heartbreak of the senseless loss of a staggering number of our babies and loved ones, as it became instantly clear each victim was one of our own families in our hearts and will remain so forever. Therefore the editors of People and myself as Design Director, with heavy hearts but with all genuine good intention, made our cover story a mourning but celebration of the lives each of the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary. We hope that those of you who trust our integrity will get past the grief you'll feel at the sight of these innocent young faces, and read our very moving portraits of survivors, extraordinary heroism, unfathomable heartbreak and the beautiful lives they led. We wont forget them. I certainly won't be able to."

2012: A Note from SPD President Neil Jamieson

2012: A Note from SPD President Neil Jamieson

llustration for SPD by SHOUT

2012: The year the designer got busy....really busy!

Ah the year-end wrap up...the final word on the year that was. The note that summarizes where we've been as a society and where we're headed...Well I can certainly talk about the "where we've been" part...but as for "where we're headed"? Well I don't know about you guys but I'm headed to the holiday party on Thursday night and will take it from there!

2012 was a complicated year for our community, it was one of great opportunity both digitally and in print. We saw some extraordinary redesigns and mile-stone editions, we welcomed back Best Life, saw the biggest ever issue of InStyle, the return (in part) of lux ad dollars and the launch issue of Howler magazine (okay that last one was for me!). Sadly this year though we also saw Newsweek go all digital and Newscorp's great digital experiment The Daily just...go.

The Top 10 Vintage Magazine Covers of 2012

The Top 10 Vintage Magazine Covers of 2012

This is the time of year for list-making. Be sure to vote in the SPD Best Cover of the Day 2012 Poll, which will be announced shortly. Meanwhile, we've put together a collection of our 10 favorite vintage magazine covers that we saw during 2012. We weren't looking for a greatest-of-all-time batch of covers....just things that we thought were really cool, relevant, or that we had never seen before. The covers in this set date from 1916-1997, and all of them look just as fresh now as they did when they were first published. Thanks to Facebook, Tumblr, and Pinterest, there were so many great vintage magazine covers floating around this year, that we've gathered 10 more here. 2012 was certainly an amazing year for contemporary cover design, but it was also the year that vintage magazine covers, through social media, exploded with their range and availability.

The Huffington iPad Magazine

The Huffington iPad Magazine

Don't sleep on the Huffington iPad magazine! That's my message to everyone for the holiday season. Huffington just marked their six-month anniversary of publication, and the now-free weekly app has become a powerful example of original tablet publishing. I've been doing a bunch of iPad consulting lately, and Huffington is always the first app I point to as something that is smart, original, engaging, and fully utilizing the power of the platform. Creative director Josh Klenert and his ace team have been creating some brilliant imagery and design, tapping a stellar crew of illustrators, photographers, and infographic-makers. It's been fun to watch the Huffington design morph and mature, especially since it's not based on an existing print publication format.

The app's cover design fuses the sensibility of gonzo altweeklies with the cool, modern, restrained look of the Dirk Barnett-era Newsweek, plus a dash of Arthur Hochstein's pop-Photoshop Time magazine covers. And the cover imagery swings from illustration to photograph to photo-illustration, with a constantly revolving collection of artists and photographers. In an era when newsweeklies are dropping like flies, it's inspiring to see someone still experimenting with the format, especially as a tablet-only app. I have no sense of the long-term viability of Huffington as a business proposition, but as a project it's on the cutting-edge of tablet content creation.

News Corp Shutting Down

News Corp Shutting Down "The Daily" iPad Publication

DAILY ICON.jpegNews Corp. is ending its "bold experiment in digital publishing and an amazing vehicle for innovation" and shutting down The Daily -- launched only back in February of 2011.

According to the press release from News Corp. and obtained by Business Insider:

"As part of a digital restructuring initiative, the company will cease standalone publication of The Daily iPad app on December 15, 2012, though the brand will live on in other channels. Technology and other assets from The Daily, including some staff, will be folded into The Post."

A close collaboration between Apple and News Corp before launch, and lead creatively by John Kilpatrick, the publication has pushed the boundaries for what could be done on a daily basis for an iPad publication. Have a look at their innovative interactive graphic, info graphics and designs here at their Design Blog.

The last issue of The Daily will publish on December 15th.
