Bespoke Magazine No. 5: Wired's Premier Issue
For the 48th SPD Pub competition and gala, Co-chairs Courtney Murphy and Marshall McKinney sought to acknowledge the "bespokeness" that adds interest to our increasingly homogenous world, celebrating publishers both large and small that are creating customized publications with an emphasis on individuality.

The next bespoke pub of which you may may not yet be aware: The premier issue of Wired, customized for the tablet. Sure its a retro-fit, but a bespoke one for sure!

Director of Digital Design Tim Leong explains:

WHY THEY DID IT:
The first issue of WIRED was so groundbreaking, so defining, that the tone, vision and design sensibility of that inaugural issue are still visible in the magazine's current incarnation. So when WIRED's 20th anniversary came around, the staff digitally republished the first issue of the magazine in its entirety on the iPad (issue 1.1.1).

WHAT YOU'LL FIND INSIDE:
To celebrate the the debut issue's prescience, WIRED digitally published each page in its full, original state--unlike its regular monthly iPad issues that translate magazine content into tablet-friendly form. To enhance the experience, WIRED added optional annotations that provided backstory, follow-ups and trivia to every page in the issue. Also included is a zoom-view, and because the spread design was such an important factor, the option to see every page in its original spread format (ads included). Kicking off the issue is a detail-rich oral history on how that first issue was made --  a must-read for any magazine fan.
