The Ubiquitous LeBron. Hercik on this week's SI cover

The Ubiquitous LeBron. Hercik on this week's SI cover

LeBron James seems to be popping up everywhere right now and Sports Illustrated has the cover to prove it. This week's cover features James playing defense in all 5 positions...at once.
This cover was the brain child of SI Creative Director Chris Hercik and in this Q&A with Inside SI he reveals how the cover started off life as a sketch, how they had to edit down hundreds of submitted images to get the composition just right and how James' choice of jersey could have thrown everything off!

Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow: Redesigning Cycle World

It's been a busy few months for the award winning design and photo teams over at Bonnier's Outdoor Group. Design Director Sean Johnston is the head of design for the group which includes SPD faves Field & Stream and Outdoor Life. Since taking over in 2009 Sean and his crew have given both titles fresh new looks with 2 great redesigns and now his team add a third to their portfolio with their retooling of classic american motor cycle mag: Cycle World.

Bonnier acquired Cycle World from Hearst back in 2011 describing it as the "Number 1 motorcycle brand in the industry" so when Bonnier's Editorial Director for the Men's Group Anthony Licata proposed a redesign Sean's team embraced the challenge.

The new look (which includes the lyrical tag-line for it's "Ignition" section: "Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow"!) was officially unveiled last night and after the jump Deputy Art Director Pete Sucheski gives us his exclusive guided tour.

My Favorite Magazine ... Benefiting the Friends of Bob Newman Fund

My Favorite Magazine ... Benefiting the Friends of Bob Newman Fund

Magazine guru and friend of SPD Jeremy Leslie is making a magazine along side Andrew Losowsky...and he wants YOUR help!

This fast, one-off publication with the working title "My Favorite Magazine" will be published as a print-on-demand project through magcloud and every single penny of profit will go to the 'Friend's of Bob Newman" Fund. (You can read more about Bob's situation here)

The brief is simple, figure out what your favorite magazine is and why, write a few words, take a few pics and send it all over to Jeremy at magculture
The plan is to produce a wonderful published piece, give exposure to some amazing work and to raise as money as much as possible for a deserving cause.

Says Leslie: "If you know anyone in magazine publishing (designers, editors, others) who would like to participate, particularly anyone with a large following that might help increase the book's press coverage and sales, please invite them to take part"...

Get more info and the answers to all your questions here

The deadline is May 30, 2013, we'll keep you up to date on Jeremy's progress!

Birth of a Magazine: Houstonia

It is not very often that you get the chance to start a major city magazine from the ground up in your hometown. Especially a hometown that doesn't have an established city magazine to compete with. That is exactly the chance Design Director Chris Skiles got this past winter when he returned to Houston to launch Houstonia, a completely new magazine that just sent it's third issue to the printer. We had to a chance to catch up with Chris and hear about this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Inside the Men's Health Redesign

Inside the Men's Health Redesign

This year, Men's Health turns 25. As humans age, we begin to evaluate our ourselves, think about the past, and what we can change for the future. The magazine is no different. MH has expanded over the years into a beast. On a good month, Men's Health has 105 edit pages, 60 of which form the Front of Book. Within that, there are six sections, each jam-packed with tips on everything from heating up a quick chicken dinner to cooling down persistent erections. In layman's terms, that's a lot of sh#!+. MH CD Robert Festino walks us through their redesign process.
