The Modern Magazine: Visual Journalism in the Digital Era

The Modern Magazine: Visual Journalism in the Digital Era

"What Is a Magazine?" asks Jeremy Leslie on the first page of this wonderful new book. There are a multiplicity of answers (of course), and you'll find many of them in this visual feast, filled with graphic delights and surprises. It's the book equivalent of a giant newsstand, and readers are treated to an endless display of magazines from around the world in all shapes and sizes, each of them a stellar example of magazine-making circa 2013 (or 2012 for some).

This book really could have been subtitled "The Triumph of Independent Publishing," because the core of the book is represented by the thriving indie scene that Leslie has promoted so enthusiastically (and smartly) on his Magculture site. "The basic alchemy of manipulating text and image on a page--visual journalism--has never been easier," says Leslie, "printing small numbers of copies has never been cheaper, and, in the hands of top practitioners, the results never more exciting."(Photo via Magculture and Francesco Franchi)MORE
The Process: Revamping Boston University's Everett Magazine

The Process: Revamping Boston University's Everett Magazine

Matthew Guemple takes us step by step through the process of rebranding and redesigning the Boston University alumni magazine.

Coming to Boston University from the commercial magazine world was an interesting challenge. Alumni magazines usually serve a fairly well defined purpose for the University's individual colleges and schools and are a key to keeping alumni engaged and informed. They are also used to raise a school's reputation among peer institutions, attract prospective students, and encourage potential donors to give funds, time, or resources. With so much riding on a magazine's success, there are a lot of stakeholders--an individual school's own marketing department, plus its dean and various other administrators--meaning you'll often get at least a couple of competing agendas. When you add other elements like the faculty or the University's department of alumni relations, you get a lot of different viewpoints and voices.

A Friends of Bob Newman Update

A Friends of Bob Newman Update

Our beloved friend and colleague (and former SPD President) Bob Newman was severely injured in March. He spent several days in critical condition, was in a coma for weeks, hospitalized for months, and is still spending his days rehabilitating--receiving physical therapy, undergoing tests, working hard to get back to health.

In the months since the accident, not only has Bob been unable to work to support his family, but the expenses involved in his ongoing care have been huge, and they continue to mount.

A group of Bob's friends (Florian Bachleda, Michael Grossman, and Emily Smith) launched the Friends of Bob Newman donation site in April as a tangible way to help Bob and his family as he continues his road to full recovery. The outpouring of support from Bob's extended family and community through the donation site has been remarkable. The funds raised to date have made a significant contribution to paying off Bob's extensive medical bills and providing him and his family with much-needed living expenses while he's recovering.

There is good news about Bob's rehabilitation, and the Friends of Bob Newman site has announced a new goal to raise even more money to continue to help.

Show Us Your Copy of My Favo(u)rite Magazine

My Favo(u)rite Magazine is the benefit project for art director Bob Newman, organized by Jeremy Leslie and Andrew Losowsky. Following Bob's serious accident in March, Jeremy and Andrew reached out to a stellar cast of magazine makers, including Florian Bachleda, Luke Hayman, Josh Klenert, Arem Duplessis, Rudy VanderLans, Richard Turley, Tom Brown, Tim Leong, Matt Willey, Mario Garcia, Andy Cowles, Dirk Barnett, Simon Esterson, Joe Zeff, and many more. The result was a collection of 88 art directors, editors, illustrators, and other visual publication creators, with covers and commentary on their favorite magazines. It's a magazine lover's delight, and all the proceeds go to help Bob defray medical bills and living expenses while he continues his recovery.

To promote the magazine, a series of Bob's supporters have been taking snapshots of themselves holding My Favo(u)rite Magazine, in locations ranging from Barcelona to London to Los Angeles to the New York City subway. It also has popped up in a number of magazine offices, including The New Yorker and Metropoli in Madrid. We've collected 20 of our favorite snapshots here, and will be adding additional photographs over the next few weeks.

8 Publishers Experimenting with Longform Features

8 Publishers Experimenting with Longform Features

With the state of magazine publishing on tablets under much debate (see: pro vs con), several publishers have been upping their game online when it comes to feature-style content outside the boundaries of replicating print editions. This type of design work is very complex -- often hand-coded -- since a desktop publishing-style WYSIWYG toolset is not quite there. In the meantime, this type of storytelling is filling a void where tablet based magazines are having a tough time competing -- they are searchable, shareable, more social and accessible on many more platforms.

Sports Illustrated jumped into the game this week -- along with their cheeky tagline: longform since 1954.

Rethinking the Traditional Alumni Magazine

Rethinking the Traditional Alumni Magazine

Georgia State University recently finished up a complete overhaul of their alumni magazine. Creative Director José Reyes of the design firm Metaleap Creative gives us some insight into the process and a preview of the redesign after the jump.

It is no secret that Alumni magazines exist on little to no art budget, serve a select group of people who want to see themselves grace its pages and are rarely exciting to anyone else but them.

After celebrating its 100th anniversary, Georgia State University was ready for a redesign, and excited to challenge much of what we know--and have come to dislike about alumni magazines and focus its pages on capturing the soul of a campus that is alive and thriving. Georgia State University is located in the heart of downtown Atlanta with an enrollment of 32,000 students and over 180,000 alumni spread across the state of Georgia and around the world.
