Lindsay Ballant gives us some insight into this cover:

Our cover story for this issue, "Our Man in Africa" is an epic piece about Hissène Habré, the former rebel leader turned president/dictator of Chad in the 1980's, who is now facing charges of crimes against humanity in the International Criminal Court. The piece takes a critical view of US involvement with Habré's army, as Reagan backed Habré's fight against Qaddafi's army providing weapons and cash, while Habré kept his own secret prisons of horrendous abuse and torture. Hence the decision to use a contact sheet of Habré's official visit to the White House, with the "Our Man in Africa" cover line.

SPD recently got a peek of the new ESPN Analytics Issue, out on newsstands now. Art director Keir Novesky gives us some insight into putting together this info packed issue.

Developing a cohesive look and feel for themed issues always presents challenges. It was particularly difficult for our third annual Analytics issue, which focuses on what Nate Silver describes in his introductory essay as "dark matter": the invisible stuff of the sports universe--toughness, potential, chemistry and more--once thought to be unquantifiable.
