Thank You Sir, May I Have Another...

Ok folks... for those of you that didn't make it to last week's Pub 44 Book Launch event at Arlo & Esme (where we've put our new mission "more fun, more often" to the test,) NO WORRIES, because the next party is already in the works. Stay tuned for details about our upcoming holiday event.
You can take a peek at the good times shared by all here, courtesy of photographer Antwan Duncan.

See you at the next one!

A special thanks once again to our sponsoring friends at
Bear Flag, Hendrick's, Milagro, Reyka and Sailor Jerry for making the night extra special by providing us with TASTY beverages.

SPD Gala 44: The Film Shorts

In case you missed them on the evening of May 8th, your co-chairs, (yours truly and Judith) joined creative minds to film with the help of David Rinella, a few shorts that were featured in between the award categories. So we've included them here for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy...

SPD Gala Screentest: TRIUMPH

Here he is, in all his glory from the night of the Gala (easy on the powder, and, really -- keep that eyelash curler away!), Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, sharing his own early influences, favorite magazines, deep thoughts about fashion, and more. Even Triumph loves magazines.

For him to poop on!

(It's Triumph, so, you know, the decision is yours about how high to maintain the volume if you're watching at work. We're not saying it's NSFW. We're just... not saying at all. -- Ed.)

SPD Gala: Screentest

A FILM BY GREG BRUNKALLA // A LEGS PRODUCTION

After the sneak-peek from a few weeks back, we wanted to share the full-length film that opened the Gala. Thanks to our co-chairs Judith and Nathalie, over 30 of the editorial design and photo greatest shared their early inspirations, their faves and must-reads, and of course, their Barbara Walters moment, "If I was a dog, I'd be..." Watch and love.
Dog Gone...

Dog Gone...

Now that your 44th Awards Gala co-hosts have had a chance to exhale, we'd like to share some of our favorite captured moments from a wonderful evenings worth of celebrating stellar magazines.
To view the gallery, the whole shebang photographed by Bryan Bedder can be found here.  Stay tuned for the top dogs screen test-inspired film from the evening, a hilarious Triumph the insult dog's cameo and some of our film shorts from the awards presentation!

Members' Choice Finalists!

Members' Choice Finalists!

Huge congrats to the variety of finalists in tomorrow night's Members' Choice Awards -- we're pleased (and a little surprised, we should admit -- ES) to say that there were more votes this year for Members' Choice than in previous years, even with our abbreviated voting period. An unbreakable tie gives us a total of SIX finalists, from some of the biggest (AARP the Magazine) to some of the smaller (The Village Voice) -- and yet, all really great work! Check after the jump for all the Members' Choice Finalists, and follow our twitter feed tomorrow night to find out who the winners are!

Yes, yes, it's late. You've got shopping to do, hair to get did, pedicures to schedule (we're looking at you here, Mr. Bachleda...) but we're gonna stop you. Right. There.

You must cast your vote for the one, the only, the Member's Choice Award. It's the only medal decided by you, the great multitudes--the SPD membership. Log in now and make your voice heard, because there's no howling allowed come this Friday night!

Dog Gone Weekend

Dog Gone Weekend

On behalf of SPD and the Pub 44 Co-Chairs (Judith Puckett-Rinella and yours truly), we'd like to thank ALL who took part in the three-day-long (yet very quick) judging last weekend. There was plenty of inspiration in the air from the more than 6,100 entries displayed, the captains, the judges, the volunteers, the pooches and the conversations that resulted.
Take a peek at a short film capturing some of these moments here and a gander at a few snapshots here.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN...

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN...

As you can see from the clock in upper right corner, time is flying by and you have some (though very little) time to send in your entries before the first deadline on the 9th. That's TOMORROW, people!

So. Tell me...why would you miss it? Is it because you want to give SPD an extra $10 on every entry to make the late deadline on the 16th? Really?? Although the organization can use it, I really encourage you to be on time because you'll want that extra $$ in your budget for the gala tickets where they will awarding more gold medals than ever before. Download entry form here, and send in those tearsheets ASAP!

PUB 44: FINAL Deadline Friday, January 16th at 5PM

Ah yes. It happens to the best of us: time keeps on slippin' away, and some deadlines just can't be met. Don't lose hope! With a tiny late fee, you can still submit your wonderful work for PUB 44.

Download instructions, entry & payment forms here. Click on the following links for info about the Magazine of the Year (FREE!), Members' Choice (FREE! to members) and Creature Feature (think of the doggies!) entries, and SPD membership. SPD office map here (yes, we moved to Union Square!).

Member vs Non Member

Member vs Non Member

Question: If I were entering PUB 44 (and I am)--would I want to pay for my entries as a non member, or get smart and save lots of $$ as a member?

I think we all know the answer to this one!
This is the community in which we work and which we are, believe it or not, members. So why not recognize this, save ourselves $10 on every entry and become a member? A few benefits to keep in mind: Get a copy of the annual FREE ($55 value); Save $5 on every speaker event (and there are quite a few); get the News & Notes and be part of the news yourself; save $200 at the Gala; be part of the Members' Choice (both entering and voting); get to know your peers; spread and hear the word of mouth; and GET INVOLVED--shape your own destiny, really.

Sign up as a member while submitting your entry form which can be downloaded here.
Throw A Dog A Bone

Throw A Dog A Bone

Beside this year's competition being a special one (new categories, eliminated circulation rule, free mag of the year entry,) and in lieu of our canine Best in Show theme, we're also giving back to the companion animal.
By submitting for one of our new categories (creature feature,) the entry fee will be donated to Bidewee.org, one of the oldest humane organizations in the United States. Download entry form here.

We are the world...

We are the world...

Oh, but PUB 44 is for your magazine.

As with my own experience meeting folks last month from the publishing industry in Denmark & Norway, and from all those amazing mags in the Berlin Shop of Heaven our SPD Pres Scott Dadich posted about, we see there's some fantastic work from all over the globe that can be rewarded and shown-off in the published annual, so keep note that this is an international competition. Download the entry form here!

NEW Categories!? MORE Categories!? WHAT?

NEW Categories!? MORE Categories!? WHAT?

Here's the deal with this year's bow-wow competition 44: No more circulation categories, but focus on content. Shazaam. Like goes with like, and the unsung (non-celebrity work, service, etc.) are DEFINITELY getting a medal at the Gala. Whaaat!?! Yeah, no joke. It's time to keep the groups together, like pooches at the Westminster Dog Show. Download the entry form here.

PUB 44: Behind The Scenes

PUB 44: Behind The Scenes

While your PUB 44 co-chairs Judith Puckett-Rinella and yours truly have been preparing all the details for the competition, I couldn't bear but document our Best in Show star Chrome during the photoshoot for the announcement poster (to be found in your mailbox this week.)
I have never met a pooch with more dash and obedience; so much that I had to stop myself from trying to mess up his perfected hair-do with the possibility of getting a mischievous reaction.

Check out the video after the jump of Chrome getting primped and primed to show us his stuff just as those tearsheet entries will be for the judging weekend in January...
