Chairs Criswell Lappin (Fahrenheit 212) and Matthew Lenning (MAT: Design Co) led the 24th Annual SPOTS competition, championing the little illustrations that say so much. From hundreds of entries, the judges selected a class of illustrations that do an excellent job of amplifying the editorial message, from a wide spectrum of publications. Winners are featured in a visual index here, and celebrated more extensively in a very limited-edition book published biannually, The SPOTS Book, showcasing both the illustrations and smaller versions of the original editorial pages that featured the work.

Pub 46: Competition Credits

The SPD Annual Judging weekend is a tremendous event bringing together the most experienced and admired creatives working with editorial content today, challenging them to sift through thousands of entries in just a few days to find the best of the best you see featured in this book. To accomplish so much, in such a short time, requires the outstanding effort of so many--once again, however, SPD is blessed to have beyond outstanding support from a small army, and they make it look easy. Andrea Dunham, Design Director, People, and Brandon Kavulla, Creative Director, WIRED, (Co-Chairs), Jeremy LaCroix, Creative Director, CBS Interactive and Josh Klenert, Creative Director, Clear Channel Digital (Online Chairs), Luke Hayman, Partner, Pentagram (Magazine of the Year Chair), and Nancy Stamatopoulos (Competition Captain) extend an enormous thank-you on behalf of SPD to all the judges and volunteers for their support in making the judging happen this year, emergency fire alarm be damned! in January 2011 at FIT.

Members' Choice Voting 2011

Members' Choice Voting 2011

Attention all members of SPD! As we get ready for the Gala on Friday, with a review of some of the Magazine of the Year finalists, and more to come throughout the week, we have one final challenge for you: time to select your top choice for the only Gold Medal selected by all the members of the Society -- SPD Members' Choice.

Entries are shown after the jump; you may click on each image to see a larger version of the entry on its own. Each member magazine is allowed to enter just one "best choice" from their year, in any format they choose. You will find visual solutions presented as covers, as single pages or spreads, as entire issues (as represented by a sample cover and inside pages), and your challenge is to apply your professional judgment and experience to choose the best solution. It may be design, photo, illustration or infographic; it may be a cover that stuns you or a collection of work from an issue that overwhelms you.

We encourage you to take some time before you vote; there's a reason we're putting this preview live this afternoon but not sending our members the voting link until tomorrow morning: we want you to have some time to look through all these entries and weigh your decision carefully. VOTING WILL CLOSE AT 6PM on Thursday, May 12th.

The Members' Choice winner will be announced at the Gala on Friday, May 13th. Finalists after the jump...

New Digital Categories for Pub 46

New Digital Categories for Pub 46

For the 2011 competition, we expanded the digital categories to account for the ever evolving world of digital and include new platforms like the iPad. This year we have divided digital into four main groups. The first group includes Typography, Illustration, Photography, Video and more. But this work is platform agnostic. After all, great illustration is great on any device.

Next we have groups for Online, Smartphone and Tablet as this groups has awards that are more specific to their platform. Site, Smartphone and Table "of the year" awards also have new categories to include aesthetics vs. functionality and those that are and are not associated with a print brand.

The full list of categories is after the jump, and if you have any questions, please leave us a comment here, or shoot us an email.
