Art Director

National Journal Magazine relaunched last year as the premier outlet for thoughtful, smart, fun-to-read storytelling about Washington, politics, and policy. Along with our renewed commitment to beautifully crafted prose came a commitment to making sure that each issue of the magazine was beautifully designed and visually engaging. The magazine was redesigned with this goal in mind; we are now seeking an art director who can carry this vision forward. The art director will design each issue of the magazine, which is published 32 times per year. Responsibilities include: -Brainstorming, commissioning, and overseeing covers; -Recruiting and working with artists to create illustrations for both feature stories and our front of the book; -Working with our photo editor to make sure that each issue includes original, striking photography; -Working with our two production editors to ensure that the design for each issue is well-executed. ​The magazine recently received its first National Magazine Award nomination in 10 years, and its small team of editors and writers are determined to keep building on the improvements of the past year. In addition to excellent design skills, our ideal art director would come with a large rolodex of outstanding freelance artists and photographers who would help to enliven our pages--as well as an understanding of the long hours and sometimes-frenetic-atmosphere involved in putting out a weekly magazine. We would strongly prefer to hire someone who is based in our Washington office.

Digital Design Intern

Galvanized is seeking a Digital Design Intern to assist in the creation of digital magazine editions, websites and email campaigns. This paid position is an opportunity to be hands on with the innovative content that has established Galvanized as a leader in tablet and mobile design. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, an eye for detail and a desire to learn. The term of this internship is five months, two to three days a week. Responsibilities: • Work closely with the team to assist with the design and layout of tablet and mobile editions for several magazines
 • Create interactive overlays using Adobe DPS (i.e. slide shows, tap-to-reveal, videos, animations, etc.)
 • Deliver polished final layouts and efficient execution while adhering to design principles and maintaining brand standards
 • Design digital marketing materials for landing pages and email campaigns

ART DIRECTOR

Washingtonian magazine, located in DC, has an immediate opening for a rockstar Art Director to join its creative team. As we enter our 50th Anniversary it's an exciting opportunity for the ideal candidate to have an impact on our award-winning suite of publications: Washingtonian magazine, Washingtonian MOM, Washingtonian Bride & Groom, and Washingtonian Welcome Guide. Working under the supervision of the Creative Director, responsibilities will include designing FOB and BOB departments, infographics, features and mentoring designers. Must have at least 5-7 years of magazine experience, a love of typography, a keen eye for complex page design and be a true team player. Proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop required; experience with K4 a plus. STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER - SAVEUR

STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER - SAVEUR SAVEUR is looking for a full-time staff photographer to shoot for digital and print. The photographer will report to the Creative Director and play an important role in developing the brand's look and feel. The ideal candidate is a recent graduate with a photography degree who is passionate about food, travel, and design. This person should have technical experience in video, still photography, and studio lighting, as well as post-production editing and archiving. We need someone who is fast, flexible, and eager to shoot and work in a highly collaborative environment. RESPONSIBILITIES: - Organize and execute in-house video and photography shoots - Color correct and retouch all site images - Shoot and edit short (under 5 minute) videos and still digital photography - Set up and use studio lighting - Assist with prop styling - Work with photo editor to organize and maintain an archive of image assets The successful candidate will: - Have a keen eye (and developed taste) for great photos - Be able to use video and imagery in creative new ways - Have excellent communication and problem-solving skills - Be comfortable multitasking in a fast-paced environment - Be hungry to take on new challenges and last-minute requests - Have experience using Lightroom and Photoshop

Senior Graphic Designer

Money mag/Money.com are looking for a talented Senior Graphic Designer to join our fast-paced and highly collaborative art department.

YOU WILL:
- Design innovative, dynamic features and special packages for the print magazine and Money.com.
- Guide assigned stories through entire design and production process.
Create, commission and conceptualize illustrations and infographics for print and digital.

YOU ARE:
- Proven: Have experience working in a fast-paced environment, preferably in a news or media organization.
- Logistical master: You make ideas happen. When given a big, elaborate task, you approach it with a clinical precision. You are detail-oriented and have solid organization skills.
- Skilled: Knowledge of WordPress, VIP ecosystem; CSS and HTML; Proficient in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

Tablet Designer

Hearst App Lab is seeking a designer to translate print publications to tablet editions. This designer will work closely with the Art Director to design tablet FOB layouts and Well stories from start to finish. They will be responsible for adding interactivity to the layouts and reviewing builds of the magazine for the QA process, and may assist in the same for phone editions. The ideal candidate will be a team player and must have the ability to work closely with editors from various Hearst Magazine Brands to assist in creating visually captivating design solutions while excelling at working both independently and in a team environment. He/she will have strong communication skills and a passion for magazine and tablet design, as well as an energetic and friendly attitude and must be forward thinking.

Assistant Photo Editor

The Assistant Photo Editor is responsible for photo research, support on photo shoots, and standing-in for the photo director on shoots when necessary. S/he develops, implements, and maintains effective systems to ensure smooth tracking of all photo needs, and works to ensure the timeliness of all material pertaining to Grand Editorial clients. - Provide thorough photo research for Grand Editorial clients (including, but not limited to, The Advocate, Out, BlackBook, and Hilton Hotels), looking beyond the usual stock agencies to find unique images - Play active role in idea-generation meetings, and serve as enthusiastic editorial presence - Manage trafficking of images from assignment through production - Serve as point person for photo department invoices and contracts - Compile caption and credit information - Supervise photo interns
