Scientific Illustrator

Science's Digital Media Design group is currently seeking an enthusiastic, hard-working, scientific illustrator to join its creative team. The ideal candidate will not only have strong illustration and design sensibilities, but will also excel in assembling and telling visual stories utilizing complex scientific data. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the Graphics Managing Editor. Major duties and responsibilities: • Create scientific visualizations and illustrations in tight deadlines for online scientific journals (Science Translational Medicine, Science Signaling, Science Immunology, and Science Robotics). • Research and create digital and print visualizations, illustrations and information graphics for the Perspectives and News sections of Science magazine. • Participate in the planning and design of interactive graphics. • Collaborate with Producers to promote our work on the website and social networks.

Designer, Science Digital Media

Science's award-winning Digital Media Design group has an immediate opening for a highly motivated designer to join its creative team. The ideal candidate is a visual storyteller with a strong typographic sensibility and a sharp eye for detail. Reporting to the Design Director, this position works directly with editors, writers, and the photo and graphics teams in a fast-paced editorial environment. This position will be responsible for the weekly design of multiple sections of the magazine. Major duties and responsibilities: • Design pages for Departments, News, and Insights sections • Art direct conceptual illustrations • Collaborate with writers, editors, illustrators, and digital media department • Create graphics for print and web • Print layouts for weekly reviews • Upload images to digital asset management system • Manage award entries • Assist design colleagues as needed Minimum requirements: • Bachelor's degree in graphic design or similar field preferred. A solid grounding in basic science education, intellectual curiosity about science, and comfort with scientific ideas is essential • A high level of design sophistication with an eye for the detail that makes good design great • Keen eye for photography and illustration, and exceptional typography skills • Work well under pressure, multitask, and adhere to tight deadlines • Must be detail-oriented, organized, and a good communicator • Be able to take direction well, and work both independently and collaboratively • In-depth knowledge of Adobe CC (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) • Working knowledge of K4/InCopy/InDesign workflow a plus • Experience in a deadline-driven magazine environment a plus This is a full-time position located in our offices in Washington D.C. Interactive Graphics Editor

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks a curious, energetic and creative Interactive Graphics Editor to report and illustrate complex and challenging scientific topics. The incumbent will pitch and develop useful, elegant, and compelling interactive explanatory graphics and data visualizations. The incumbent will create and maintain cutting-edge site features and applications that further enhance our interactive, social, dynamic user experience. In a content-driven, fast paced environment, the incumbent will create user features and performance optimizations; collaborate with product and project managers; collaborate with design, back-end and infrastructure teams; write scalable, reusable, highly performant, responsive front-end code. Minimum requirements: • Extensive university or college-level training leading to a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience • A minimum of 5 years of experience creating and maintaining web applications with an emphasis on front end and javascript technologies • Experience in developing front-end javascript interactive graphics on a variety of deadlines • Experience and deep understanding of development with HTML and CSS • Experience with D3, JQuery, backbone, Angular or other visualization tools • Experience with back-end technologies (RoR, Django,PHP) • Practical knowledge of statistical analysis (SQL, R or other packages) • Experience of mobile-first development • Good understanding and design skills with Adobe Creative Suite • Some experience with Drupal and WordPress are a plus, as well as 3d applications and video FX and editing • Familiarity with design basics like typography, color and information architecture in a storytelling context • Experience in a news/information setting is a plus This person should work well in a team environment and be ready to initiate ideas and concepts for graphics, taking advantage of the available information and the unique approaches to visual storytelling that web technologies make possible. Candidates are expected to be able to see patterns in datasets and design original visualizations that bring clarity to complexity.
