Science's award-winning Digital Media Design group has an immediate opening for a highly motivated designer to join its creative team. The ideal candidate is a visual storyteller with a strong typographic sensibility and a sharp eye for detail. Reporting to the Design Director, this position works directly with editors, writers, and the photo and graphics teams in a fast-paced editorial environment. This position will be responsible for the weekly design of multiple sections of the magazine.
Major duties and responsibilities:
• Design pages for Departments, News, and Insights sections
• Art direct conceptual illustrations
• Collaborate with writers, editors, illustrators, and digital media department
• Create graphics for print and web
• Print layouts for weekly reviews
• Upload images to digital asset management system
• Manage award entries
• Assist design colleagues as needed
Minimum requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in graphic design or similar field preferred. A solid grounding in basic science education, intellectual curiosity about science, and comfort with scientific ideas is essential
• A high level of design sophistication with an eye for the detail that makes good design great
• Keen eye for photography and illustration, and exceptional typography skills
• Work well under pressure, multitask, and adhere to tight deadlines
• Must be detail-oriented, organized, and a good communicator
• Be able to take direction well, and work both independently and collaboratively
• In-depth knowledge of Adobe CC (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
• Working knowledge of K4/InCopy/InDesign workflow a plus
• Experience in a deadline-driven magazine environment a plus
