The Art Director works with the Creative Director in the development of new design concepts and establishes the "look and feel" of all aspects FiveThirtyEight - an ESPN-owned and operated high-volume website that focuses on quality of content with specific emphasis on data-driven journalism. This position assists in the creative development process of design, photos, marks, and the tone of this platform and product. The Art Director is responsible for the final execution of design direction under the supervision of the Creative Director.
This role requires broad knowledge and advanced skills in visual design, information architecture, user interface design, web standards, and a solid understanding of available client-side technologies, as well as an ability to work within a team of designers, editors, and developers to further brand recognition and editorial goals.

Responsibilities
- Well-versed and passionate about photography, illustration, and typography
- Interest and experience in Data Visualization
- Outstanding communicator, with an eye for detail
- Creative thinker, resourceful, organized, detail-oriented
- Experience in providing art direction to photographers and illustrators
- Ability to concept and collaborate with a diverse editorial team
- Ability to lead a team of developers and technologists on execution and implementation of design concepts
- Leads execution of wireframing, UX, and testing processes across all platforms
- Ability to prototype concepts efficiently and effectively under supervision of Creative Director
- Ability to concept and create in-house illustration
- Knowledge of the evolution of design within the sphere of digital media
- Must have a passion for design and eagerness to push for creative execution
- Manages multiple projects, produces design within fast paced environment
- Able to maintain consistent design vision across multiple projects
- Able to source and maintain relationships with illustrators, designers, and photographers consistent with goals of Creative Director
- Provide art direction to illustrators and photographers consistent with the goals of Creative Director
Basic Qualifications
- A minimum of 6 years of art direction experience (print and/or digital).
- Extensive knowledge of Adobe CS, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop
- Deep understanding of user interface, interaction, design and front end design across platforms
- Working knowledge of CSS, HTML 5, AfterEffects, Javascript, JQuery
Preferred Qualifications
- Able to lead consistent design vision across multiple platforms.
- Experience in fast paced editorial environment.
Required Education
Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in related field.
