Position Summary
Reporting to the Art Director, the Associate Art Director is critically involved in the creation and implementation of the magazine's visual "language," look and identity. He/she participates in all creative planning and implementation, as well as helping with conceptualization, layout and design for all sections of the book.
Responsibilities
• Participating in all planning, strategy, post-op and brainstorming meetings
• Generating art, photography and illustration concepts that will create compelling, engaging stories while at the same time reinforcing the magazine's mandate, philosophy and profile
• Design feature and upfront editorial layouts for Western Living, Vancouver magazine and our Special Interest Publications for approval by the Art Director and Editor in Chief
• Act as art director for Special Interest Publications
• Work with the editorial department to make modifications to designed pages as needed
• Schedule and assign work to freelance illustrators and photographers
• Attend previews for photo shoots and finalize details with photographers
• Art direct photo shoots and problem solve as needed
• Oversee the production of editorial pages and proof digital images to ensure colour and retouching accuracy
• Send and receive digital files and communicate with production when required
• Modify and approve final pages
• Work with promotional department to oversee the design in-house ads, promotional requests and other art related projects
• Oversee image content for e-newsletters of both magazines.
• Train and direct interns and freelancers in the art department systems and administration
• Conduct photo research as required
