Art Director, Houstonia Magazine, Houston
Houstonia magazine has an immediate opening for art director. This is a senior position at an award-winning, 85,000-circulation publication dedicated to the highest standards in editorial and design, based in one of the nation's largest and most interesting cities.
Responsibilities: The art director will set and maintain standards for all art content--design, photography, illustration and production--for Houstonia. Duties include design or design approval of magazine art content, assigning and editing photography and illustrations, and cultivating relationships with freelance photographers and illustrators.
The art director will have a comprehensive creative vision: the ability to generate original concepts, a high level of design sophistication, a keen eye for photography, and exceptional typography skills. The ability to create images using infographics or typography is a must; the ability to illustrate, a plus. The art director will supervise the associate art director, manage workflow with monthly deadlines, work in daily collaboration with editorial and production teams, and execute occasional custom publishing projects.
Experience: Five years of experience designing or art directing for a national or regional consumer magazine. Two years of experience hiring, managing, and mentoring designers; managing a budget; art directing; and producing photo shoots including portraits, food, fashion, and still and documentary photos.
Skills: Education and technical background must include expert skills in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Web skills including design, video, and interactive media are a huge plus.
Soul: We are looking for a magazine design geek who is fun to work with and is dedicated to channeling Houston's unique creative, quirky and diverse character into an expanding, multi-platform media brand. We live in an exceptional city and are committed to celebrating it and challenging it with the magazine it deserves.
