Digital Art Director

Digital Art Director Mother Jones, which recently won the Magazine of the Year award from the American Society of Magazine Editors, is looking for a digital art director to push the visual story-telling envelope, improve our UX, and discover new ways to connect with our readers. You: Live and breathe great design and have a strong foundation in typography, photography, illustration, and usability. And you love journalism, and know that right now is an incredible moment to bring the two together for a big impact. You relish both big-picture brainstorming and hands-on design work. You're a nimble, even-tempered multitasker who enjoys the magic of conjuring great work from a limited budget and staff. You want design that is smart but not prissy, groundbreaking but approachable, eye-opening, not head-scratching. Us: A reader-supported, nonprofit news organization that publishes a torrent of original reporting each day on our site, in addition to our gorgeous bimonthly print magazine. You will work closely with a talented art, photo and production team and reporters and editors committed to innovation. With a great team and an Ozzie-winning redesign in place, we look forward to innovating on the reader experience, including the design of marquee stories and engagement projects. You'll work on everything from fast-turnaround photo illustrations to longer-term premier projects (such as the massive private prison expose we published last year, or our Russia scandal vertical) and a new initiative to incorporate documentary filmmaking and animation into the newsroom workflow. We're particularly interested in candidates with UX as well as design chops--and, of course, you'll bring your expertise to the print product too, helping to ensure that powerful, in-depth reporting shines across all our channels. We're looking for someone who'll light our imaginations on fire, but who relishes teamwork in a breaking news environment where the art and design staff are not walled off from the journalists; who is eager to be a part of an organization that is designed for the future, not the past. This position is based in our San Francisco office; remote is not an option.

ART AND IMAGE RESEARCH

Art interns at Tikkun engage deeply with the question of how to illustrate articles about politics, social change, and spirituality. They work on our national magazine and on our website, generating illustration ideas and conducting image research. They play a central role in finding imagery for use on our new multimedia blog site, Tikkun Daily, which features regular photo essays and art galleries. In the art world these days, it is quite difficult to find images that are not only artistically strong but also have social content. We need images that critique the pretensions and cruelties of our materialistic and self-centered culture. We also need artwork about peace, spirituality, hope, and social transformation that is NOT sappy, corny, or part of a New Age aesthetic. Interns are encouraged to scour museums, galleries, artists' websites, and online image libraries to find these sorts of images. Art interns work with the editors in Berkeley, where they develop relationships with freelance artists, obtain permission to reprint images, and brainstorm ways to illustrate the complex concepts often explored by articles in the magazine and on the magazine's website. Interns with strong art skills may also be encouraged to try their hand at creating original illustrations to be considered for publication in the magazine.

Art Director, San Francisco

As a key member of a three-person creative staff, the Art Director contributes to the overall look of this National Magazine Award-winning title, and is instrumental in designing features and FOB departments, in collaboration with the Design Director. This is a hands-on position involving all aspects of creating one of the nation's most visually sophisticated monthly magazines: conceptualizing and generating design approaches, assigning photography and illustration, directing photo shoots, creating infographics and charts, doing photo research, following layouts through all phases of production, overseeing color correction, and shipping files.

Art Intern at Tikkun Magazine

Art interns at Tikkun engage deeply with the question of how to illustrate articles about politics, social change, and spirituality. They work on our national magazine and on our website, generating illustration ideas and conducting image research. They will play a central role in finding imagery for use on our new multimedia blog site, which is currently under construction. The site will feature regular photo essays and art galleries. On the print side, the design process at Tikkun is a dynamic collaboration between the magazine's editors in Berkeley and the Design Action collective in Oakland. Art interns work on a part-time unpaid basis with the editors in Berkeley, where they develop relationships with freelance artists, obtain permission to reprint images, and brainstorm ways to illustrate the complex concepts often explored by articles in the magazine and on the magazine's website. Interns with strong art skills may also be encouraged to try their hand at creating original illustrations to be considered for publication in the magazine. Internships last a minimum of three months.
